7/24/2009 Rooney’s July 4th in Pictures

Rooney’s barbecue was again a great success. As expected, over a hundred villagers and none-villagers passed by to sample his delights. For those who never made it, they missed out not only on seeing the many faces, from New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Canada, Jamaica and even as far as England but the great food. This year’s selection consisted of Roast Fish. Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork, corn, manish water, etc.

The occasion was also graced by our surprise guest of honor Mrs. Ruby Gibbs past-Teacher and vice Principal of Spring Village All age School who served from 1971 through the early eighties. It was complete shock and awe on the faces of many of her past-students when they arrived and saw her; many who have not seen her for decades.

The day was also punctuated by Rooney’s preaching (which he does each year) as he shared the word of God, prayed and invited his guests to a relationship with Christ.

Many thanks to Rooney and his wife Carlene who each year graciously opens up their home and provide such feast for the Spring Village community in these parts. As a result this has become a tradition and therefore has garnered its own following even without being advertised.

Rooney’s annual barbecue continues to play a key role in the cohesiveness of the Spring Village community abroad and all villagers will be forever indebted to them for their immense kindness.

7/03/2009 St. Catherine Parish Library visits the Spring Village Library

The Senior Librarian of the St. Catherine Parish Library, Miss Paulette Benjie is scheduled to visit the Spring Village Library for the second time this year. The first visit was done a few months ago where the occasion was used to evaluate the library and provide valuable feedback in key areas.

This is part of the overall strategy of the Spring Village Library project where the goal is to establish an ongoing relationship with the Jamaica Library Service and thus benefit from their expertise so that appropriate methods can be used in the establishment of the library.

This visit will be used to train our three librarians to arrange the books using standardized practices so that they can be located more efficiently by patrons. Discussions are also underway to allow librarians to attend additional training sessions on location in Spanish Town in the near future.

Usage of the Spring Village Library continues to grow as it is starting to be seen as commonplace within the community. It gets daily use from the 30 or more HART student population currently attending the Training Centre plus the surge of grade-school students (25-30) which comes in daily to borrow books. In addition, those attending high school as well as college drops in during the evenings to do homework or to work on their research papers. Finally, the small but growing number of adult visitors (who are now getting used to the presence of a library in their community) are slowly but surely coming in to do their share of reading and learning to use the computers. These successes underscore the relevance of the library project and are indicative of the great future which lies ahead.

The Spring Village Library is extremely grateful for the support of the St. Catherine Parish Library as it establishes itself and an invaluable resource within the surrounding area. Its presence eliminates the need for bookmobiles as well as a schools library program, plus the depth and breadth of its collection will make it a hub for students and professionals within the surrounding areas and beyond.

The much needed expansion of the facility has seen setbacks late last year due to the lack of specific building materials but despite these challenges the focus remains and the project team will continue to seek support; therefore, it is not a question of “if” but “when”.

11/18/2008  Recent Passings

It is with much regret that we mention the passing of the following villagers who have left us just within the last few weeks:

Roy Balgrove (Scotty, Bev father), Tony Bogle (AKA “Soldier”, Venece Car’s husband), Wilbert (The great Burru singer), Miss Dotty (Pung’s widow).

Our thoughts and prayers are with their family. A great loss,…..ones who have made their contribution and have now moved on…

08/04/2008  The Spring Village Website turns 5 years old

This August the Spring Village Website celebrates its fifth birthday, that’s right. This marks an important milestone and it seems like only yesterday; but as they say, “time flies when we are having fun”.

After tens of thousands of visits from people from all over the world, villagers and non-villagers alike, the Spring Village Website continues to chronicle the happenings of Spring Village and to unite villagers at home and abroad.

Much of this can be seen from the early excitement created when the site was first launched, where villagers found themselves for the first time with the ability to gather around a central connection point, one which they could call their own and one which forever changed the way they communicated.

As a result of the site those who have not seen each other for many decades now have a means of reaching one another, either by exchanging of messages online or by seeing one another across the globe in pictures.

Some have seen their friends and relatives this way (only in pictures) over decades. Others have shared that this has brought tears to their eyes after not seeing their loved ones for such a long time.

The website is also key to bringing together villagers from all over the world as they converge on Spring Village for this year’s Homecoming.

7/01/2008 Florida Chapter ships second 40-foot container to Spring Village

The Florida chapter has done it again! Monday June 30th marks yet another milestone in the life of the Florida chapter as they have sent their second container with much needed items off to Spring Village. This should hopefully arrive in a few weeks and should coincide with the activities of Reunion 08 this August. Shipping was provided by Jamaica Broilers who through their generosity has for the second time funded the entire cost of shipping. Jamaica Broilers has its roots in Spring Village and has been the most active corporate entity in the aid of Spring Village since its inception. Thank you Broilers!

The last shipment consisted of furniture for the All-age school, Elementary school, Training Centre and Library. This shipment will consist of furniture as well as other items to outfit the Home Economics department of the Training centre.

Thanks to Carlos Gayle (Chicken), Norace Harris (Sheryl), Evanella Shaw (Miss S) and the rest of the Florida team this came together after many months of careful planning. The shipment will be of great value to the community and will prove like the last one to be just what was needed to make a considerable impact to these institutions. Additional assistance was also given by the New York Chapter which provided funding for loading the containers. This is yet another example of the collaboration needed to make all these projects a success as various chapters chip in (where possible) to make the final outcome a success. Another example of this was the clearing of books shipped last year by the New York chapter as Florida and Canada also contributed to make the burden lighter.

These endeavors continue to be part of the ongoing renaissance of Spring Village as its sons and daughters come of age to help chart a more positive course for its future. Efforts like these serve to remind us that the future of Spring Village “is in good hands” indeed.

06/14/08 UK Chapter Fun Day Reunion 08.

Saturday 31 May 2008 is a day to remember. The U.K. Spring Villagers and their supporters had their day trip to the picturesque Harbour Park in Little Hampton, West Sussex. They enjoyed a day of Food, fun and laughter. It was said, the  men were so vastly out-numbered by the women that even if they tried to buy some from outside to make up their numbers they still would not have found enough.

Spring Village certainly went to Little Hampton and as we thought gone were the days when we played cricket over Ball-ground near Miss Tomma, over Hayes Pen or even behind the school. We were not able to go down to pothouse bottom to pick any of Mass Joe, Uncle D, Tata, Mr. B or Mass Aubry's mango but we certainly had a fine time.  The men (it seemed), hailed from the dark rocky roads from Rest House to Lady’s Gate whilst the women, hailed from the green plains of Hayes Pen through the smooth roads from Barrick to Bottom Pipe were engaged in a lively Cricket match. When the challenge was put forth for cricket, the women asked for a mixed side but the men with their supposedly high and mighty over-confident selves were adamant that they wanted MEN against WOMEN. As a result, the women rose to the challenge.

The encounter was astounding, as not even Brian Lara in his heyday was as good as the women especially Ferret Cameron. Not to mention the women’s wicket keeper Faye Squire (no West Indian wicket keeper could measure up her). When it came to bowling Ferret, Faye and Jacqui Banton gave them more than what they bargained for. The women indeed made minced-meat out of the men's bowling. The women made a staggering 64 all out but the men far less. The men were sent in to bat and they were said to have disgraced the men of Spring Village. Leon DeLahaye batted for about half hour and only made one single (deggae deggae) run. Talk about falling off one's trolly, the men who were so over-confident were slaughtered by the underdogs. In general, the rest of the batsmen (Besides Teddy) were not worth commenting on and were humbled to have to called themselves Spring Village’s top batsmen.

The match ended with the women victorious and the men strongly advised that the next time they decide to challenge the women, for their own sakes they should get some practice first.

The ambience reflected one of creativity and style as the room was beautifully decorated with a sultry pink and white theme and soft lighting to complement the atmosphere.

The affair was graced with many familiar faces as the event was much of a reunion as well as a celebration. Congratulations to Canada as they put out their best to honor our moms.

03/28/08 Spring Village Community Library to be used as ICT Computer Literacy Centre

The facilities of the Spring Village Library will be used as a venue to promote Computer literacy in the community. This is a program affiliated with the HART NTA Trust and is designed to provide computer based literacy for 17 - 25 year olds.

The location will be used as a pilot centre for promoting computer and computer communication technology in order to help narrow the digital-divide often found in lesser urban areas across Jamaica.

The program will be designed and sponsored by ICT4D, which is an open, Jamaican-based network organization established to define, promote and facilitate the use of information and communication technology in Jamaica’s development process. It is a non-profit organization with main partners such as the HEART Trust/NTA and the IICD.

The facility came to be chosen through our resident Peace Corps Volunteer Craig Erickson who recently attended one of their seminars and introduced ICT4D to the idea of having a centre in Spring Village. Because of the resources on location it was an easy choice for them.

Students who use computers at most ICT facilities across Jamaica are required to pay for time on the machines, however in Spring Village this will be provided free of cost. In addition, the library also has advanced material which will help to enhance these programs from basic all the way to professional levels.

To read more about ICT4D please click here!

01/16/08 Library Computer found

The computer which was recently stolen from the Spring Village Community Library was found in the bushes on Tuesday morning at about 10am. It was discovered on the grounds of the library and seemed to have been put there overnight by the culprit and was likely due to the public pressure created in the community after the incident.

In response to the robbery students and staff demonstrated throughout the village demanding that the equipment be returned.

Based on the latest information a 7 year-old boy who frequented the library and an apparently avid user came forward on Monday to report that the computer was allegedly stolen by his 15 year-old brother. As a result of this new information further investigation is being conducted.

The Computer on the other hand seemed to have had its share of bruises during the fiasco and have suffered some degree of physical damage. It is not yet clear if it is still operable.

01/10/08 Computer stolen from Spring Village Library

The Spring Village Community Library suffered its latest tragedy as it was discovered that over the past weekend (possibly Friday Night, Jan. 4th) thieves broke into the building and stole one of five computers.

According to sources, this may have occurred during one of the many power-cuts which have been plaguing the island over the last few weeks.

It was suspected that the culprits may have either hid in the building before it closed or have entered through an unlocked gate adjacent to the library which was accessible only from the roof. As a result the door to the main section was pried open and one of the four computers stolen.

In response, the HEART students and staff of the centre took to the streets and launched a demonstration to protest the burglary. They bore placards sending the message that “they (burglars) were stealing from the future of their own children and that the computer be returned”. This was done to sensitize the community of the depravity of the action and proved to be somewhat effective. As a result, calls were made to the centre with possible tips. One caller claimed that the unit had been seen in someone’s yard however this proved unfruitful after the police arrived to investigate. The only significant finding was that on Wednesday the mouse was returned by someone who claimed to have found it.

On Wednesday a remote meeting was held with the staff and Jerry Nelson of the N.Y. chapter to discuss the issue of security. It was mentioned that ironically, last month, a security company was brought in to conduct an evaluation of the facillity and make recommendations for installing security equipment. Unfortunately the report has not yet been received and therefore would greatly be considered in light of this situation.

Currently, the staff is working to reevaluate the issue of security to prevent future incidents from occurring. This includes preventative measures such as installing additional burglar bars and instituting specific procedures to ensure the entire facility is secure.

01/01/08 Happy 2008!!

Happy new year to all Villagers at home and abroad and while we bid 2007 goodbye we are thankful for the many blessings and grateful for God’s provisions through the most challenging times.

The year 2007 was quite an eventful one as the village resurfaced from Hurricane Dean which rocked the island in August. Despite these challenges and others we are very grateful to be alive. Lets also think of those who have lost loved ones along the way and offer up a prayer for their comfort.

As we approach the new year we can definitely say that much has been accomplished in 2007. It marked a year where we have finally started to see more direct fruits of the sons and daughters of Spring Village as they come together to improve life in the village.

Much of this was displayed as we have seen major impacts to the All age School, Training Centre and Community Library.

Below are some of the highlights of 2007

      All Age School

·         Florida Chapter provided furniture for Principal’s office, staff room and teacher’s desks and chairs for classrooms.

·         New York Chapter started a Chess club where over 20 students are now playing chess weekly.

Training Centre and SVDF

·         Florida Chapter provided furniture for main office so staff can be more comfortable.

·         New York Chapter provided technical support for the computer network to get back up and running.

·         There has been greater collaboration between the SVDF and chapters which have resulted in the success of the library and shipment of furniture and is in keeping with their goal to improve communication with the diaspora.

Community Library

·         Florida Chapter provided furniture to furnish Library.

·         New York Chapter refurbished the library and brought it to greater functionality by tiling the floor, creating a computer console, and donating a new computer. The library now has five computers.

·         New York chapter shipped over 5000 books this summer.

·         Canada, New York and Florida Chapters donated monies to clear books from the wharf.

·         New York Chapter set up Library Management software to manage the circulation of the Library.

·         There are almost 100 registered members of the library since the summer refurbishment.

·         The library is being used daily by students from the all age school as well as high schools. It also hosts a homework assistance program during the evenings. Others outside the village are also using it as well.

·         Donations have been made to purchase texts books for the library so needy students can use them during homework hours.

·         Plans for expanding the library are now underway. An estimate of materials needed to construct the second floor has been obtained and a program for raising these funds will be launched this year. So far, pledges have been made for 800 of the 1800 blocks needed.

Spring Village Reunion 08

·         The Canada Chapter has launched the framework for Reunion 08 and is busy organizing the event.

·         The Canada Chapter is in the process of establishing a local arm to help organize the event.

Health Aid

·                     The U.K. Chapter has helped various individuals in the community with relief assistance on health issues.

·                     Florida Chapter is discussing the feasibility of a health clinic to be established in the village.

From the above one can clearly see that the Diaspora is continuing to make their mark in the community like never before. This is a direct result of the network which has been established over the last four years with the launching of our website and creation of chapters. In fact, the Diaspora has never felt more connected. Much more is anticipated for 2008 and with God’ help we believe it will happen. Thanks to all who added their piece to the puzzle in 2007.

12/24/2007 Florida Chapter Annual Get-together in Pictures

Even though much of the north is freezing during this time, one can always find warmth in the Ft. Lauderdale Florida. Besides the natural warmth form the great weather the hospitality form the Florida Chapter was even more enriching.

This year they hosted their second annual barbecue and it proved to underscore that they are truly on the map as a chapter. This was seen from the large increase in attendance over last years and proved more than ever that there has is sizable contingent of villages in southern USA which has been untapped for all these years.

Besides those from Florida proper there were others from Alabama, New York and Pensylvania.

The Florida team put out their best and it was certainly well received. The Fish soup, mannish water and other Jamaican delights were off the charts. One highlight was Chicken’s patented “Gas Stove in a cardboard box”. Yes, believe it or not it is true. In fact, it turned out to be the most efficient stove on location and was responsible for bringing the mannish water to its most perfect state.

The event was somewhat delayed due to an earlier power cut but was in full swing towards the late afternoon.

11/30/2007 NY Chapter Labor day Get-together in Pictures

The phrase “when east meets west” is often used to show various contrasts or to depict significant clash of cultures but how about “when north meets south to collaborate with central”? Well, it was something like that since for the first time in the history of our get-togethers we have seen Canada and Florida come together to link with New York. In fact, that was not the entire story. Not only were there people from Canada and Florida but other places in between like Pennsylvania and Maryland as well, not to mention those who came from England to New York by way of Florida.

Four years ago this may have been only a dream but no more, as villagers are linked together now more than ever.

The wide range of attendance at this year’s event was testament to that and shows what the power of communication has done to transform our landscape. Furthermore, the success of this event is truly a precursor for the 2008 Jamaica Reunion.

This year’s summer barbecue was also a first for the Floridians and many of them took the opportunity to tour the sites of New York City including its many skyscrapers and other landmarks.

The event kicked off a bit late which affected to food schedule however, villagers know how to come together in every crisis and make the situation a success. The day ended with its share of fish, chicken and the usual tastes.

11/28/2007 Toronto Chapter Fall Dinner Dance in pictures….. “A touch of class”

If you missed this year’s dinner dance you would have missed one of the classiest events ever. The Toronto chapter some time ago was in a lull but that hiatus is long gone. The type of events they presented in 2007 is testament that they are back and are here to stay. It also underscores their role as the mother chapter and is truly an example for others to follow.

As it is sometimes said “there is no success without obstacles” and putting on this year’s event was not without its share of hurdles. In the final hours they found out that the venue which was originally booked was no longer available, so with quick thinking and some ingenuity they were back in business in no time.

The event was well attended and as expected, there was a good mix of old and new faces. Special appearance was also made by Miss Ambro (From Gutters) who with her usual jovial self fit right in.

10/14/2007  Florida Chapter Ships Furniture for School and Library.

Kudos to the Florida chapter for their efforts in getting much needed furniture to Spring Village. The furniture is comprised of chairs desks tables and other miscellaneous office equipment. This will be of great benefit to the All age school, Spring Village library and the Training Centre. The items filled a 40-foot container and were shipped with the help of Jamaica Broilers who sponsored the shipping cost.

This has become their first major project as a chapter and one which will impact the village for many years to come. This is yet another fine example of what can happen when the Spring Village diaspora comes together and is truly the beginning of great things to come.

If you were at this year’s Canadian barbeque you would have had an unforgettable time. It is quite evident that the Canadians know how to put on a show in their own traditional style as they pulled the masses together “from the cold”.

Barbecue 07 proved to be a defining moment in the resurgence of this chapter, sending a strong message to all that they are a force to reckon with. The event was marked with great fanfare as they sported T-shrits heralding the coming of  Spring Village reunion 08”. Not only Canadians showed up but those from the USA as well to add support to the occasion.

07/20/2007  The Mother of all” Spring Village Reunions.

Book your flights, mark your calendars, pack your bags and make plans as early as possible as we prepare for a mega-Spring Village reunion in the summer of 2008.

This promises to be an event you won’t want to miss. It will be the first of its kind and will become another segment in the renaissance of Spring Village.

Yes, over the last few years we have witnessed a dramatic shift in the coming together of the Spring Village Diaspora as four chapters have been formed in key locations around the world and as a result, villagers have never been more networked. What we are seeing is the coming of age of the sons and daughters of Spring Village as they pick up the baton to carry Spring Village into the 21st Century.

This is part of a long-standing tradition where past generations have help to define the village and make it what it is today, the only difference is that this generation has more sophisticated tools and a larger pool of resources to bring to the table. This makes it an exciting time in our history.

Thanks to the planning and guidance of the Toronto chapter (Canada), this event could not have come at a better time. They will spearhead the overall event and will collaborate with the other chapters and local bodies to make it a reality.

Visit the website for updates and give your feedback on the discussion page.

07/11/2007  Fourth Annual U.K. Spring Village Reunion.

Mark your calendars as the U.K. Chapter in invites all villagers to their fourth annual reunion. This promises to be another unforgettable event and one that will continue to shape the landscape of Villagers in the U.K.

As the years transpired we have seen the U.K. chapter grow from strength to strength as they reunite the mass of villagers in that corner the globe.

Villagers have migrated to the U.K. since the 1940’s, way before mass migration to the USA and therefore this is the place where so many generations have their roots transplanted. It is for these reasons why the U.K. Chapter holds such significance and as the years go by we hopefully tap into the historical side of villagers who have made their home in these regions from these early migratory years.

05/22/07 JASPEV visits Spring Village.

After many months of planning, Jamaica Social Policy Evaluation (JASPEV) will make its first visit to Spring Village. This will be held on Saturday May27th and will consist of a day of talks and entertaining activities which are geared to the youth. Special effort is made to reach out to unattached youth to provide them with options for further education and other forms of socioeconomic upliftment.

Thanks to the work of the Spring Village Development Foundation (SVDF) ,which have been in the planning stages for some time, the event is finally becoming a reality. It will be held at the Hayes Pen playfield and will feature speakers from JASPEV and various displays at different information booths. Visitors will be allowed to participate in an information “treasure” hunt which will prompt them to go to various booths to gather specific information. This makes the event fun as well as educational.

Besides the efforts of the SVDF in courting JASPEV to visit the Village, efforts were made by the New York chapter almost a year ago to collaborate with VASPEV on their visit. The goal was to work with JASPEV as part of the follow-up process after the event. As a result, the Spring Village Associations will participate by providing information on each Chapter showing opportunities available to the youth and information on some of their current projects. These include the Spring Village website as well as the Spring Village Library. The Library will also be open so visitors will be able to walk through and experience the resources available to them.

There will likely be a Live broadcast on RJR Fame FM.

05/19/07 N.Y. Chapter Fifth Annual Dinner Dance and pictures.

Last Saturday evening went down as another memorable event held by the New York Chapter. Besides the great food, the occasion was extra special since there were many new faces on site. Special mention to those who drove and flew up from sunny Florida to face a bit of Northeast chill. Thankfully, besides some light rain and moderate drop in temperature they were not in total shock. It was great to see these folks who many of us haven’t seen for decades. This of course added a special treat to the evening.

The event was kicked off with prayer by pastor Runey Frances and the National anthem sung by our own Jamerican idol Nardia. We also had our own version of Miss Lou, as we were favored with a wonderful dialect called “on the bus”.

This year, the N.Y. Chapter honored many at home and abroad for their contribution in the field of sports. The award ceremony was conducted by President Rosie Cameron. The honorees were Derrie DeLahaye, Mikey Fullerton, Vincent Alves, Dave Miller, Keith Hibbert, and Shawn Smith. Shawn was on hand to receive this certificate as he was awarded for his feats in track and field in New York State. Others who were not present will have their certificates mailed.

Since it was the eve of Mother’s day, at exactly midnight, corsages were pinned on all mothers present.

Thanks to all who participated to help make it a great occasion. Much of this year’s event was captured on video which will be posted at a later date. On the other hand, to see pictures of this year’s event  Click here!

05/03/07 Countdown to N.Y. Chapter Fifth Annual Dinner Dance and pictures from 2006.

We are only 10 days away from this year’s annual dinner dance held by the New York chapter. This promises to be a memorable and much anticipated event as this year we will be graced with many members of the Florida chapter as they fly in or drive up on route I95 in their country busses from sunny Florida. J

It will be quite a treat seeing many how we haven’t seen in decades as reconnect as Spring Village style.

As we all know, the NY chapter is always there to put on their usual show and this year will be no different.

On this year’s menu we will have Scarlet’s famous chicken and curried goat. This promises to be a tasty offering especially since his chicken has already been seasoned from three days ago, making it a total of 13 days under his special marinating.

Last year was quite an event, as we took the timeout to honor three key people who have shaped our community in the most profound ways. These were past principal Mr. Lawrence also known as “Star”, his brother past vice principal Nathaniel “Natty” Lawrence and past teacher Miss Beulah Munoz.

Star, as he is nicknamed (meaning star of the show) was honored for over thirty years of service to the community. In his acceptance speech, he spoke with the most profound conviction concerning man’s purpose on this earth. Our purpose on this earth he said, “is to serve…and only in doing so can we fulfill our divine purpose on this earth”.

Natty was also honored for his contribution to education and Beulah Munoz was also honored for her contribution to sports as well as education.

An award was also given to Jerry Nelson for his contribution to the Spring Village website and its roll in bringing the Spring Village Diaspora together.

This year will have its share of honoring others who have made our community proud and special attention will be given to mothers as it will be the eve of Mother’s day. At midnight each mother will receive a special surprise.

4/10/07 Florida Chapter’s inaugural get-together in Pictures

Congratulations to the Florida chapter on their first get-together. The establishment of a Florida chapter was a long time coming, over three years or more and it is finally here. This event was held last November and therefore ushered in a new era in the lives of villagers in the Florida region.

As the concept goes, the formation of Spring Village chapters is designed to unite villagers and to bring goodwill to Spring Village. This will be the fifth one of its kind and the fourth of those formed outside Spring Village.

As their chapter grows they will identify specific areas in the village that they will assist. Thanks to the hard work and support of the New York chapter, as many of their members including president Rosie Cameron was on location to provide support.

3/20/07 Miss Sweet Gal (Edwards)

We regret to announce the recent passing of Miss Sweet Gal from the Edwards family. She passed away on March 19th in England after battling a long illness. She was one of the most well known figures of Spring Village and will certainly be missed. Miss Sweet Gal will be remembered as one of the gentlest of persons and certainly one of the greatest cooks. Many years back she was known to be a master at cooking for major events held in the village including dances at the Nelson’s Lawn and many others.

Our heart felt Condolence goes out to the entire Edwards and Carr family, Garland, Kwame, Venice, Marva, Lala, Elick, Joe, Ina and many more in the U.K. and Jamaica. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

03/03/07 Jamaica Broilers to provide High Speed Internet to Community Centre and Library

Thanks to the generosity of Jamaica Broilers there is now high speed internet access provided to the Spring Village Training Centre and Library. This is very significant, in that, it not only enhances accessibility but for the first time puts Spring Village on the express lane.

Up until now villagers abroad have been linked together on the internet due to their ease of access to the Spring Village website. As a result, old relationships have been rekindled, reunions held, chapters formed and now there has been a closer feeling among villagers that distance no longer hinders. Unfortunately, the village has lagged behind because of its limited access.  Thanks to Jamaica Broilers and the efforts of the library project all of this is about to change. Villagers will now be able to use computers located in the library for gaining access to the rest of the globe and freely communicate with loved ones as they gain real-time knowledge on what is happening around the world.

The Library currently has four computers and hopefully as time goes by the number will increase. This is a significant leap for the library and obviously a key part of its infrastructure but it is highly symbolic, since the project is not even a year old and the library not yet officially open. In the future, the library will have a computer room where a variety of tasks can be conducted. This is part of the goal to expand the current facility into one which can adequately meet the needs of the community.

Anyone who has equipment to donate or would like to be a part of this project please visit our library page to see the current needs. Contact can be made by sending an email to pothousepen@yahoo.com

Thank you Jamaica Broilers!!!!

01/01/07 Happy New year.

A happy and prosperous New year to all Villagers at home and abroad. 2006 went down as a year of tremendous growth as we have seen a greater level of maturity among our chapters.

The purpose of our chapters remains the same as we unite villagers across the globe and bring goodwill to our village.

One of our key achievements of 2006 was the heightened intercommunication now experienced among chapters. As a result, ideas are starting to flow more freely across them and members are understanding that we are no longer bounded by our location.

This is huge, since just a few years ago we were struggling to form the NY and U.K chapters. Now we have seen the organization of our new Florida chapter and the soon-to-be regrouping of the Canada chapter. Its working!

When we launched the website almost four years ago the most organized chapter was Canada, today we have established groups in NY, Florida, U.K and Canada.

There is now a tighter working relationship with the SVDF and other local bodies, hence the progress of our library and plans to enhance local health projects.

In 2007 year it would be great to see us embark on the area of scholarships. It would be also nice to see more direct contributions in the area of sports, since this is a key barometer of the social fabric of our community.

This year will also have its own challenges but if we just stay focused and think of our labor and its impact over the next five or ten years we will see it is well worth it.

What we have accomplished so far is due to the hard work the historical research team, library committees, organizers and individual contributors.

As a result, we have seen a direct display of the caliber of talent among villagers as they are being used for the betterment of our community.

11/17/2006 The Spring Village Library Project update

The Spring Village Community Library continues to make steady progress. The library now has over 15 registered patrons and counting. This may not sound like a ”big deal” but it is, since last year this time, a location was just found and the book count was next to nothing.

As of this update, the library has over 2,500 books on location, with another 3,000 to be shipped. This includes CDs and videos enough to create a small audiovisual library. That’s a lot of ground to cover in only one year, thanks to all the library teams and book donors.

The activity is also starting to pick up and the word is getting around. In fact, there are high school students who have stared to travel from outside the village to use the facilities during the evening hours. Besides this, there are students from the nearby primary school who drops in every evening to use the computers. According to reports, they have been known to fight to use the computers and drive the librarian somewhat crazy but “this is a good thing”. J

Who would have thought that the response would have been so overwhelming even though the library is not yet opened?

This activity further underscores the importance of such a facility in the community and shows that this was a need just waiting to be filled.

The expectations are that within the next 5-10 years we will see an upward scholastic shift within the community as a result of providing such access. This should also greatly benefit students currently attending university, casual readers as well as working professionals.

The work continues as we now focus on bolstering the lending system. The librarian is being trained to use the software, which should be up and running in a few weeks with the current patron population and the materials in circulation. The training period is somewhat tedious but takes some time as one would imagine.

Another key milestone is to get the existing computers networked and online. This may be easier said than done since we are having issues with basic phone lines and the phone company but we shall see.

The building expansion program is also in view as we estimate costs and devise means of raising funds. More on this later….

Now that the library is starting to function more steadily it is a perfect time to have another open house. This should help get the word around and enlist more community support.

With all this activity, we are also building a website for the library. Hopefully this should be ready within a few months and should help provide more flexibility for gaining wider access. To take a sneak preview Click here!

10/28/2006 U.K boasts their biggest ever Get-together .

When the U.K. chapter decided to host third annual get-together at the PEO Business Centre in London, there were many scoffers. In fact, they were thinking the response would be the same as it was at last year’s event. For many it was a pipe dream but in reality it was a resounding success.

The U.K. team has done it again! This year they hosted their largest ever get-together rivaling those held by New York and Canada. There were over 300 in attendance including many friends of villagers. In fact, the turnout was the most colorful as there were blacks, whites, Indians as well as mixed races present to celebrate the camaraderie often felt among villagers.

As it is well known, besides those who migrated to England within the last 10 to 20 years, there are those who left Jamaica since the mid to late 50’s and have settled there to make a better life. As a result, over the years there have been many generations, thus resulting in a massive population with Spring Village roots residing in Brittan. In fact, most villagers who migrated abroad started their exploits to the U.K primarily because of Jamaica’s colonial ties.

With this huge population of Spring Village expatriates it is no wonder why it became quite fitting to launch a Spring Village chapter there. We hope the London chapter will give birth to others in the broader U.K.

There party was so spirited that it started at 7pm and ended at 3am, not without protest (peaceful of course).

Many left the event reuniting with others they have not seen in over 20 years, making the occasion even more memorable.

Thanks to Leon, Bertram and their team, much of the gaiety was captured in pictures. It should also be noted that not only do these pictures preserve the moment, but when shared with the wider community, they have the power of bringing a tear to the eye and or a slight ache in the heart to those who have not seen these friends or loved ones in a very long time.

09/25/2006 Historic launch of Florida Chapter.

It is official! Yes it is finally confirmed that the there will be an official launch of the long awaited Florida chapter. The Florida villagers will hold their inaugural get-together on Saturday November 25th. This will be the fifth Spring Village Association and the fourth of those formed outside the Village.

The first was the Canada (Totono) chapter, which was formed over six years ago, followed by the USA (New York) chapter in the last three years and then the U.K. chapter formed two years ago.

The purpose of the chapters is to unite villagers remotely and in the process provide good-will to the community. As a result besides social events, each chapter adopts a charitable cause inside the village and pools their resources to implement it.

So far, the Canadian has adopted the All-age school, the NY chapter the library project, U.K. healthcare, primarily for the aged and it is currently rumored that the Florida chapter may adopt sports. In any case, it will be great to see their new chapter on board.

09/03/2006 Pictures from the 2006 Annual Spring Village New York Chapter get-together.

The annual NY Spring Village Get-together was another great success. Even though the effects of Hurricane Ernesto kept may villagers away, the event was still well attended. There were about 120 or so who braved the weather to add gaiety to the affair.

The event was not only attended by Canadians but those from Pennsylvania, Maryland and even as far as Florida.

Thanks to our Canadian visitors, (about two bus-loads) the event, though off to a slow start was a hit to the very end. This year, the Canadian villagers brought with them members of a group known as “The Eastern Flyers”. This group normally travels to the US twice each year and chose to grace us with their presence on this occasion.

Besides their usual proclivity for travel they regard themselves as the greatest Domino players. In fact, they publicly state that when it comes to Dominos, they are known punish even their friends and closest relatives. Well, we shall see what will happen when they meet the Spring Village players.

The food was also among the best ever. Thanks to Skarlick, Rosie, Dimples, Authalyn and the team, we had the best Jerk chicken, curried goat, pork, ox tail, soup etc. Scarlick’s jerk chicken was seasoned from at least four days before the event and the result was obvious, as each piece was seasoned right through to the bone.

In general, this one of the best reunions ever, as some folks reportedly, have not seen each other for over thirty years.

08/29/2006 Annual Spring Village New York Chapter get-together.

Get ready this weekend September 2nd and 3rd for the long awaited Annual Spring Village Summer Barbecue. Of all the events this is the most anticipated. Besides the folks from Canada, others will be coming up from Maryland and Florida to join the New York chapter in this two day event.

It will take place at Kayara Hall in Bronx where, on Saturday there will be the great barbeque with lots of food and music. On Sunday there will be the usual Domino tournament Canada vs. the USA. This event will be held at the same location.

This year all non Canadians are invited to become members of the New York chapter as their membership drive comes into full swing. Also, do not forget to bring your old or new books to donate to the Spring Village Library project. Yes, we are setting up a library in the village so that villagers of all ages and disciplines can have a place to enrich themselves. To keep track of the progress of this project visit the library project page.

08/29/2006 Florida chapter to be launched…as heard through the grapevine…..

As Jamaicans often say “if it is not so, it near so”. We have heard through the grapevine that Villagers in Florida are on the move to forming their new chapter. If rumors are correct, there may be a possible kickoff around Thanksgiving weekend. As the story goes, someone from the New York chapter met with quite a few interested parties in Florida last weekend to help rally their group together. If this plays out, as may be expected, this is will be a key location for organizing a sizable population of villagers. As many of us know, there are large pockets of villagers in places like Canada, U.K. the North East USA and Florida. With Florida on board we could now have winter events by the beach, Florida-grown Ackee and Mangoes shipped to the North east and elsewhere, the possibilities are endless.

Put “fun an joke aside” we would all love to see a Florida chapter and this is one which is long overdue. Stay tuned for more information.

08/04/2006 The Spring Village Library Project update

As it is often said, “a rolling stone gathers no moss” this view could be held of the Spring Village Community Library project. After a year of just searching for the appropriate location, the effort has gone from concept to unfolding reality.  The library now has over 2,500 books on location, with another 1500 plus to be received in the near future. With training provided with the help of the Jamaica Library Association, it now has its own homegrown librarian Shereece Francis on board. Shereece, along with the local library team has been quite busy preparing the library for general utilization for the near future. This is no small feat as they have been putting in extra effort to catalog the thousands of books in light of the constant changes around them. The following are some key highlights of the effort:

Software

A major milestone has been reached in that, the NY Chapter has purchased and delivered the Software needed to run the library. This no small achievement since, it has the capability of managing circulation of over 20,000 items including books, CDs, Videos, artifacts etc. Yes, the library will also have a section dedicated to Spring Village history.

The software is a data base which manages the circulation as well as Patrons and allows librarians to check in/out items. It also allows the collection to be searchable on the WEB for wider access. This is clearly an investment that will last us for the next 10 - 15 years or more.

 Short term Expansion

The funds obtained from the CHASE grant came in handy to help create some temporary space. This is done until a more permanent structure can be created. Some of the funds are already going towards salaries however, much has gone to purchase and construct a plywood wall to enclose the area between the bathroom and the existing library to prepare the library for possible use in September for the back to school crowd. Additional shelving is currently needed to complete this.

Limited Use

Although the library is in its infant stages, there is currently limited use of the material by students at Centre. For the first time, some of the Home Economics students have actual texts to work with. This makes a great difference in their learning. All who contributed to the library’s success so far should be proud! When the books are all catalogued this will certainly pick up.

Long term Expansion

A rough estimate was received from Mr. Joe Green for finishing the bottom floor of the library. If the bottom is complete the top floor can be tackled later. The figure will be published once a more complete estimate is received. It is possible that fundraisers can be launched among chapters to contribute to the materials and then apply some of the remaining CHASE funds to labor.

Open House

Yes! Believe it or not, the first open house was held on Monday July 31st.

This was an impromptu event, thanks to the help of the local team, and was geared to help us create more awareness and garner additional community support. It was also centered around Cook’s visit to Jamaica, where he would speak on behalf of the New York Chapter and deliver the software to the local team.

Visitors were able to see the work already done, including the tons of books on shelves, the structure and the upcoming plans for the future.

Due to the short notice in getting the word out the attendance was somewhat low; however there are plans to have another open house in the near future. By then, the library should be much closer to public use. The displays created for the event will still be up during the next few months for all who stop by.

07/13/2006 Rooney’s Annual July 4th Spring Village Barbeque

Thanks to Rooney and Carlene our gracious hosts the barbeque was again a hit. Many villagers, friends of villagers and those who wished they were villagers showed up to enjoy the delightful tastes offered by Rooney. Many may not be aware but Rooney’s cooking is truly a tough act to follow. By popular vote, his barbeque is among the top rated events of the summer.

The main menu this year consisted of Barbeque chicken, roast fish stuffed with a variety of vegetables including fresh Collaloo from his garden. There was also Jerk pork, a well known Jamaican favorite which was seasoned so thoroughly that the flavors were soaked through to the bone. This explains why people keep returning each year for this event.

In addition to the great foods there was the usual share of jokes, reminiscing and playing dominos which added greatly to the festivity.

There were even comments that Rooney had so much Collaloo plants that his backyard it looked like Grove Farm back in Jamaica.

05/28/2006 Spring Village History publishes new material on Camp Verley.

The Spring Village historical research team has published their latest article on another important feature of the village. Camp Verley, which is the national Camp site of the Jamaica Seventh Day Adventist church remains another key feature of our village. As most villagers know, it is part of the Spring Gardens area and its establishment is directly tied to the history of the village. Much of the history of Spring Village is connected to the influences of the Verlys being the chief land owners. As a result, their impacts are far reaching.

Our research will continue with places like Hayes pen, another Verley contribution and also Jamaica Broilers. The goal is to write the history of the company in terms of the contribution of villagers from its early days.

Thanks again to the research team for their long and hard work. The Camp Verley article and others can be found in the “Points of Interest" section of the web site.

05/23/2006 Kenn and Jeanne Miller Peace Corps Volunteers to Spring Village.

Throughout the last five years or so Spring Village has benefited from the work of various U.S. Peace Corps volunteers. These folks have left their home and other comfort zones to travel to different parts of the globe and offer their service to a variety of humanitarian needs. As a result, not only do they impact the lives of those they encounter, but their own lives are changed as well.

Jeannie and Kenn Miller are no different in this regard. As residents of the state of Michigan and former volunteers to Haiti, they have chosen to spend the past two years at Spring Village. Since then, they have been based at the Spring Village Training Centre, from where they involve themselves in the various needs of the community.

Since their tenure they have been occupied with some key ventures like the Neem and Moringa tree planting project for sustainable development, Youth and elderly health care, including a weekly blood pressure clinic at Shiloh Baptist Church and the collaboration with community associations on development of the Spring Village Community Library. These are just some of the areas in which they place their efforts. Through the past hurricane season, they have helped to organize the training centre as an emergency shelter and have also helped to rebuild structures in the aftermath of the storm. Truly, as villagers we are forever indebted to them.

In June of this year their mission comes to a close as they prepare to return to their homeland. Throughout their stay, we have been enriched in countless ways by their presence. As villagers worldwide, we all say thank you to both Jeanne and Kenn Miller for sharing their lives with us. In this regard, we consider them honorary villagers and we will be forever friends.

3/28/06 Spring Community Library update

The Spring Village Library project has reached a major milestone as the committees have made their first shipment of books to Jamaica. This is the work of those who have donated their time, money and labor to collect and package books for this occasion. Thanks to everyone, we have sent almost 2500 books to get our library off the ground. This is the result of our book drive which was launched in September 2005.

The sources have ranged from individual contributions to surplus donated from libraries. Thanks to all for your contribution!

Currently, the Jamaican committee has engaged the Jamaica Library association to help give guidance with cataloging and the general setup of the library. They have offered to train two members of the community and have expressed a commitment to helping us succeed. It is hoped that at some point we can have them operate the unit as a collaborative effort.

The Jamaican team is also busily preparing to receive the shipment as they have fumigated the book room and are currently tiling the floor. With the large volume of books they will also need to construct additional shelving.

A computer was donated last year which should help with the cataloging process. Software is also being evaluated for managing the circulation.

It should be noted, that the library effort will be run in two phases. The first phase (now underway) is to get the existing infrastructure operational for general use. The second is to expand the current facility to create additional space for reading, computer lab, audiovisuals, etc. Proposals are currently being drafted for this purpose. All who are skilled in any of these areas are invited to participate. We will be calling on all our resources to make this happen.

To keep current with the progress of this project, visit the library page at: http://www.springvillage.org/VillageLibrary.mht

03/03/2006 Spring Village History publishes new material.

The Spring Village historical research team has finally published their latest article on one of the most important features of the village. The Spring Garden Bath, which is quite familiar to many, is one of the defining feature points of our village. In fact, our village would not have its current name if it were not for this location.

Thanks to the long hard work of the researches another important feature point is being shared with the wider audience. The team will be following up with research on Camp Verley, which is also located in Spring Garden, plus other articles under research like Jamaica Broilers, Hayes Pen and others. It is the goal of this team to archive the research in our library which is currently in the making.

The research on Spring Garden Bath can be found in the “Points of Interest" section of the web site. For those of us not currently in the village, it is the closest you will get to its refreshing waters, “at least for now”.

The effort continues as the team tackles the history of these significant locations to uncover how they have contributed to the shaping of the Village as we know it.

If you would like to join the research effort contact the History team at pothousepen@yahoo.com

12/28/2005 Spring Village History team to publish new material.

The Spring Village historical research team is currently reviewing new material to add to the list of other feature points it has already documented. This is in line with the ongoing effort to record parts of our history for generations to come. The team is currently working on an article on Spring Garden bath, which is one of the most profound features of the area. Stay tuned for this new posting.

12/28/2005 The Spring Village Library Project.

Steady progress continues to be made as the Spring Village Library Project ramps to another level. The committees have collected over 1000 books for donation since September of this year and the count continues to climb. These books cover a wide range of subjects and disciplines and will help bring access to a breath of knowledge for members of the community.

The presence of a library will not only add prestige to the community but will also serve the many high school and university students in the area who sometimes need travel far distances to further their knowledge. Currently there are students who go to the Old Harbour Library to every Saturday to study. If we could provide them daily access, this would enhance their efforts greatly. With our own library in operation we could easily meet these needs plus those of others in the community who would like to access new reading material. If this project is done properly, its collection could rival that of other libraries around. There should be something for everyone including working professionals.

The books collected so far are of varying interests. They cover Art, Science, Mathematics, Languages, Computer Technology, Automotive Technology, Medicine, Psychology, Teaching, Hotel Management just to name a few. They are very current and will help to provide Villagers with access to today’s knowledge as well as that of the past. It is hoped that some day after the cataloging is complete; the library collection will be searchable on the WEB so others outside the library can also access it.

The NY Chapter is currently preparing a letter of offer to the Spring Village Development Foundation to indicate their interest to support the venture. They are also preparing to send their first shipment of books, which should take place in early 2006. Everyone is equally excited about this effort.

To keep current with the progress of this project, visit the library page at: http://www.springvillage.org/VillageLibrary.mht

12/23/2005 Spring Village Christmas day live Cyber linkup.

After reviewing the polls, based on the popular vote we would like to have our cyber chat linkup from 2pm to 5pm Eastern Standard time. If you do not want to be on the chat room then just post your greeting on the discussion page.

As the technology improves, then hopefully next Christmas we will be able to do video links. For those who would like to try this you can find more about video communications at www.logitech.com a webcam and microphone and a high speed internet connection would be needed.

Merry Christmas to you all!

12/23/2005 Jermaine Bailey.

The Spring village community mourns the sudden passing of Jermaine Bailey, sometimes known as Yankee. Jermaine was the son of Nevaldo Bailey and Jennifer Jennings. Jermaine was only 25 years old and a thriving university student from Maryland USA. Jermaine is also the grand-son of J.P. Luna Bailey of Spring Village.

A viewing was held on Thursday December 24th in Maryland with internment planned for Jamaica. Our thoughts and prayers are with both the Bailey and Jennings family at this time.

12/15/2005 Historic Spring Village Christmas day live Cyber linkup.

In former years technology was a limit but no longer. This Christmas day we will have our first live Spring Village Christmas day linkup ever. This will be accessed through the Spring Village website where villagers will be able to send greetings to other villagers no matter where in the world they are.

Today, most villagers outside Jamaica are clustered around USA, U.K and Canada, but believe it or not, some villagers have also made places like Jordan and Belgium their home. Thanks to the internet, we will be able to chat live and connect to each other no matter where we are located.

We will have Villagers in Jamaica sending and receiving greetings to those world wide and vise versa.

To determine the most suitable time for this, a poll is conducted on this website www.springvillage.org . Website visitors are asked to vote for the most suitable time and we will pick the two or three most voted time slots. The success of this will depend on how many votes are collected.

In addition to the live chat, Christmas greetings can also be posted ahead of time on the discussion forum. Lets all make use of this opportunity as we forge into the

21st century and narrow the technological gap.

12/02/2005 Arrival of the Bushy Park Indians.

The Indians of Bushy Park has been a key part of the fabric of Jamaican history since the 1800’s. They journeyed from East India by boat and landed on the shores of Old Harbour Bay in 1845. They provided a cheap source of labor during the post-slavery era and since then, have integrated in Jamaican life and throughout the years, have become major contributors to our society. As the years progressed, large numbers arrived, thus accounting for the large Indian settlements in central and south-western Jamaica. These settlements include Bushy Park, Old Harbour and Vere.

Today, due to the proximity of Spring Village to Bushy Park, many Villagers are descendants of the East Indian community. Many senior villagers like the Harridons find their roots in this great culture.

11/23/2005 Villagers in the USA Celebrates Thanksgiving.

On Thursday November 24th Villagers in the USA will celebrate Thanksgiving Day along with the rest of the American Diaspora. This is a time when Americans perform their Thanksgiving feast celebrating the arrival of the first Pilgrims from Europe back in the 1800’s. The day was made a national holiday by President George Washington (America’s first president) and later instituted as the fourth Thursday in November by President Abraham Lincoln. During Thanksgiving most Americans gather around the table to have a feast with turkey as the main course.

Although Thanksgiving Day celebration is obviously not a Jamaican tradition, Villagers at home and abroad no doubt, have much to give thanks for. If we stop to count our blessings we all find much to be thankful for.

10/07/2005 Spring Village Library Update.

The spring village library committees have begun their meetings to kick off the Spring Village Library project. The goal is to create a functioning library where villages of all ages and levels of education can come to further their knowledge. This will be a place where ideas can be exchanged and independent research can also be conducted. The library will have areas for study, internet browsing and places where free form discussions can take place.

The library will be housed as part of the Spring Village Training Centre but will operate independently and be accessible to all villagers. The project is currently endorsed by the Spring Village Development Foundation and will consist of a partnership between villagers locally and abroad. It will be located on the northern end of the training Centre and will consist of two levels. As the planning continues, it will become clearer how the space will be utilized.

So far, the goal is to run two phases of the project in parallel. One phase is to make the existing book room functional for use in the very near future. This requires shoring up of what is already established, stocking additional items and cataloging them. The other phase is the actual expansion where the additional space can be upgraded for future use.

All villagers worldwide are invited to lend their support through donations of supplies or cash where appropriate. This can be done through their chapter’s library committee. These committees exist in Spring Village, Canada, U.K. and New York.

Please visit the website in the near future for updates on the library. A web page will be created to keep everyone informed. In the mean time you can show your support for the library by placing your comments on our Library discussion link. No passwords necessary: Click here

10/07/2005 Pictures from 2005 Spring Village New York Chapter Barbeque.

Pictures from this year’s NY Chapter annual barbecue are finally posted. They hopefully reflect the candid side of this year’s function and capture some of its most festive moments. The function was well attended and at least 200 or more villagers came. Some members of the Canadian entourage were present as usual but not in large numbers as last year. It is always great to see them and hopefully next year they will continue the tradition. We also had Peaches from the U.K. this year that graced us with her presence. The food was abundant as usual and the hospitality was wonderful. Special thanks to Freeman and Karen who each year, open up their home to us and shower us with great warmth and the best of hospitality. We are greatly indebted to them for their generosity.

This year’s barbecue focused on our book drive as we kick off activities to set up a Spring Village Library. Many books were collected and we have collected almost 600 to date. So far there are library committees set up in Jamaica, Canada, New York and the U.K. to help make this a success. Villagers are encouraged to donate books through the library reps within their chapter. Progress on the Library can also be tracked on our discussion page as well as our soon to be published “Library Project” web page. Stay tuned!

In addition to the book drive our fundraising T-shirt sales was a hit. This was the result of the work of Rosie Cameron (President) and her team who provided some of the most beautiful shirts of the highest quality. The design was done by Tonisha Gordon. For those who would still like to get one please contact Rosie. Note however, that there may be a small fee for postage.

On Sunday there was the usual Domino tournament of Canada vs. the USA. This however, was not well attended as expected. Next year we will have to re-evaluate our planning and simply “wheel an come again”.

All are still invited to become members of the New York chapter as the membership drive is still on.  Click here for Membership forms.

09/15/2005 DeLaHaye Reunion.

It may have probably been said during the week of August 1st 2005 that there only two kinds of people in this world, those who are DeLahayes and those who aren’t. Well, they may have been correct in their assessment. One cannot but admire them for their charisma as they pull off one or the largest and most memorable reunion stunts in the village.

Hats off to them as they celebrate their wealthy heritage and we all congratulate them for this. Their celebration took many forms and ranged from family get-togethers to beach trips with a final culmination with the wedding of “Happy man” one of the sons of Reggie DeLahaye.

Go DeLaHayes!  Some of their reunion pictures can be seen at the following link: Click Here

08/31/2005 Annual Spring Village New York Chapter get-together.

Mark your calendars as the Spring Village Association (NY Chapter) invites everyone to their most anticipated 2005 annual get-together. This is again hosted by Freeman and is the official end of summer bash village style. Villagers on the East coast and elsewhere will link up with the Canadian massive who comes down from the cold north to have a good time. This is an annual event which came out of a tradition started by our Canadian neighbors and honored guests. In past years they would come to New York in bus loads to rally us together. After this they would shop till they dropped as they enjoy the holiday weekend. Thanks to them this year the tradition continues.

This is a two day affair which will be held September 3rd to 4th -5th and begins at 4pm. On Saturday there will be the great barbeque with lots of food and music. There will also be a fashion show put on by interested parties to add to the variety during the evening hours. On Sunday there will be the usual Domino tournament Canada vs. the USA. This event will be held just across the street from Freeman’s. There will be lots of old and new faces to see as we celebrate together.

To keep track of the progress of this project visit the discussion forum: Click here

08/03/2005 NY Chapter Dinner Dance Pictures.

The New York Spring Village Association had their dinner dance on Saturday July23rd. Many villagers turned out to have fun New York style (late evening to early next morning). Of course the food was great and as usual it didn’t last. This is their second fundraising dinner dance this year. They are currently on a membership drive and urge all to become members. Also, mark your calendar for the next summer event September 3rd & 4th at Freeman’s (Check the calendar of Events page) where the Villagers from Canada will join those in New York for a two day event as we bring the summer to a close.

08/03/2005 Runey’s Annual Barbecue 4th of July was a blast!  (New York Chapter).

The annual barbecue held at Runeys was well received as expected. All New Yorkers and others came together to have fun and enjoy each others company at their annual summer barbeque. As one would expect the food was delicious. Stories have been told how the pork prepared by Runey has been one of the best tasting ever. It is a known fact that some villagers have taken home Runey’s pork and have literally “nursed” it  for a whole week to make sure it never finishes.

If you missed pictures of the event can be found at the following links. That’s all that’s left.

08/01/2005 DeLaHaye Week.

The week of August 1st 2005 is officially known as DeLaHaye week in the village, where, members of the DeLahaye family from all over the world gather for a gigantic family reunion. The festivities kick off this week and lasting for however long the DeLahayes want, they are entitled! It will culminate on a resounding note with the wedding of “Happy man” one of the sons of Reggie DeLahaye.

The village will be filled with gettogethers to celebrate their reunion. Mega families like the DeLaHayes, Bryans, Lawrences, Francis, Gilberts, Campbells, Walters are known to have defined the Village. The DeLaHayes have been in the Village from at least the 1940s. The three main DeLaHaye Matriarchs were known as Reggie (the village Butcher and businessman), Beckman (the Bulldozer operator) and Purry (the businessman). Much of their legacy is still seen inside the Village today.

As one would imagine, throughout the years many of the Village families have blended. It is often said that “all villagers are related” and if an actual family tree was done there would be no surprise.

Come join the DeLaHayes, wana-be-DeLaHayes and other pumpkin-vine DeLaHaye-likes as they celebrate a reunion which is the first of its kind. Congrats to them all!

05/02/05  New York Chapter 3rd Annual Dinner dance.

The NY Chapter Annual dinner dance went down this past weekend in fine style. It was a good opportunity to run into some old faces and get together village style to reconnect. Villagers certainly know how to get together and this occasion was no exception. Of course since these are chiefly New Yorkers their function started on the late side of the evening (about 11:30 pm or so) and not end until the wee morning hours. In general, they had a good time as they opened with the Jamaican national anthem and yes prayer followed by the festivities.

Some came from Connecticut and the rest of the Tri-state area and even as far as Maryland to support the New York chapter. The event was well attended and was seen as the best turn out in all other prior events. Congratulations to the NY Chapter.

04/22/2005 Spring Village Football Team Past to Present. Celebrating their Division II Victory.

Life in the Village back in the days….. This evening's Observer report of the heroic, record shattering and simply awesome performance of OUR Village football team, however, has forced me to break my "situation" imposed incommunicado.

For those of you who have not yet heard, the Spring Village football team has finally mustered the courage, resolve and fortitude to shake that age old monkey of inconsistency, self-doubt and mediocrity from its back to claim its rightful position of St Catherine Division One contender; by finally winning the Central St. Catherine Division II football competition.

This is by no means an easy feat and should not be treated lightly. In fact, over the past 35 years numerous teams of promising players with boundless potential have emerged and tried valiantly to slay the insidious Division II dragon, but all have withered by the wayside. None before now have been able to extricate themselves from its thorny, suffocating grips.

In the early 70's the great coach Dennis Chen and his Mighty Men were considered invincible and unstoppable. With players of the calibre of Scoop, the two Tonys, Daddy Coo, the Harris Boys, Mutt, Gentles, Norman and Copter, it was inconceivable to even think that such a team would not eventually represent the entire parish of St Catherine!! It turns out though that the only team they could convincingly beat was Sanko, Cabalerro and the other Merry Men from Church Pen. They were the first of many teams to fail the D II hurdle.

At the twilight of the 70's and the dawn of the 80's, new entrants to the team include the up-the-road Delahaye trio of Derrie, Collie and Beckman, while from down the road, Copter and Ho-ko (dollar) were fixtures in the squad. Governor and to a lesser extent Channa (Putty) forced their way into the side with their aggressive defensive play. Bigger brother Scoop was a mainstay. Natty Garfield at that time was quickly fading as a defensive wing back, while Steven Myrie from Ghello Piece was a treat to watch on the ball. Shearer Banton was at that time taking biger brother Kenneth's place in the squad, while Chi-lin-ke was emerging as a phenom between the sticks.

As the 80's progressed wave after wave of new talent entered the fray. Copper, the Balgrove brothers, Marshalleck, Karoo, Banny, Dave Banton, Harry Bennett , Nacieve, Timol, Dave Miller and myself all tried in vain to dispense with the D II monkey without avail.

The Mid 80's saw the transitioning of a new breed of players into the squad - DaCosta and Manning Cup players!! Heading this list were the likes of Bryan, slick Jackie Slime (Author), the effervescent Bun, the mercurial and deadly Nedris, the skillful Slicer, the playmaker Kiman, the hard tackling and never say die Turner, Trees who considers himself a general, Desmond and Stomach holding the back line. Just like their predecessors, they too wilted at the alter of D II.

The 90's saw the emergence of the young and fit. names that readily come to mind include Granny the goal keeper, Skoochie, Skilla, Harry Banner, Belly Rat, Hansom Toby and the likes. A team was even established by combining the synergies of Village and Scheme, well funded and organized, but.... just could not shake the old monkey.

These list of players from the different eras of the Village football history is by no means exhaustive. There were many, many others who had donned the Jerseys of the Village in their noble quest to "Bus OUT!! only to wimper and sigh in the abject agony of defeat.

And so Villagers one and all, this convoluted route was taken to put in perspective the essence of what has been accomplished here. As a true enthusiast of the sport and supporter of the team, it is with relief, humility and a sense of deep pride that i lift my hat to Fernando and Zowie for marshalling the troops to finally, yes finally, slay that darn D II monkey/dragon. Thank you guys, I am really proud of you all, Ron and Vincent- the goal scorers especially. I dare say that all who have tried before you are genuinely appreciative of your efforts.

The onus is now on all of us to get the team prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. Its folly to finally break free from the D II dragon only to slip back into its oppressive bottom-of-the-barrell clutches after just one season. Lets all put our shoulders behind their effort and encourage them on!! They will need it to be competitive at Division I. Yo'all remember it takes cash to care!!

03/09/2005  New material released from the Spring Village Historical Research Project.

Congratulations to the Spring Village history research team on their latest contribution in their ongoing efforts to documenting the history of Spring Village. Their latest addition is a piece done on the Thetford Great House which is known by most villagers as Mr. Clyde’s house. This can be found in the “Points of Interest" section of the web site and is a result of months of research.

Thetford House is a key focal point in understanding not only the village but the surrounding areas as well. Its history dates back to the capture of Jamaica by the British and therefore points to much of the evolution of the village as we know it today. In addition to information on the house there are also references for further study for those who would like to dig more deeply into our historical past. It is hoped that this will help incite curiosity into the fascinating history of our Village and even blossom into ways in which villagers can trace their own family history and understand how each piece adds to the whole.

Other upcoming articles will feature Spring Garden, Camp Verley, Jamaica Broilers and other interesting points. This is seen as the beginning of a fascinating journey into understanding ourselves better. Thanks to the following members of the team: Rosie Cameron, Rollin Campbell, Latoya Christian, Garfield Gilbert, Tony Howell, Errol Jennings, Jerry Nelson, Beulah Walters, Humroy Whyte and Lenroy Whyte.

Visitors to the website visitors are also welcomed to participate in discussions pertaining to our history on the Spring Village Discussion board. No membership is required but more features will be available with membership. It is hoped that this forum will be effectively used to exchange views and ignite further interests.

Those who would like to volunteer in helping to conduct research are invited to send E-mail to pothousepen@yahoo.com.

01/06/05 Volunteers needed for Spring Village Historical Research Project.

In order to properly document and make available the history of Spring Village, a team of individuals have come together to research and document various aspects of the village’s past. Although the group is small so far, there is a request out for other volunteers, both locally and abroad who has an interest in this area to sign up and become a part of this extraordinary adventure. The goal is to select certain feature points of the village and properly document its history. These findings will eventually be posted on the website for wider distribution.

Currently there is research being done on Thetford Great house and Spring Garden Bath since these are key points which hold answers to much of the shaping of Spring Village. Other feature points like Hayes Pen, Broilers etc. will follow.

All website visitors are invited to feel free to use the Spring Village Discussion board for discussions around any of these topics. No membership is required but more features will be available with membership. It is hoped that this forum will be effectively used to exchange views and ignite further interest in this exciting area. The site will also at some point provide resource links where individuals could use as a starting point for researching their own family history. It is hoped that in the end, Villagers will be aware of how fascinating the village history is and will understand its place in Jamaican history.

Those who would like to volunteer are asked to send E-mail to pothousepen@yahoo.com It is hoped that this will become an enriching experience for all.

01/01/05 Happy New year.

A happy and prosperous New year to all Villagers, Adopted Villagers, Would-be Villagers, far, far cousins of Villagers and those who would like to be Villagers. May the Peace of God reign in your hearts!

Let’s remember the challenges of 2004 and trust the Lord for health and strength for the New Year. Let’s stay together and continue to build our community for the betterment of all. It is when we unite and bring good will to our community in whatever small way we can, that we erase the negative elements that would want to overcome us.

Thanks to all for your support of the website over 2004. It is working and it is bringing us closer together. If we get to link someone we have not spoken to in years, it was definitely worth it. We hope it will continue to be a multifaceted forum, where we can not only communicate with each other but learn more about our past and hence build a better future.

All the best for 2005!

It is with much regret that we announce the passing of Rebecca Castle also known as Miss Becky. As one of the elders of the Village she was always a pleasant and quiet member of the community. Miss Becky was the wife of Mass Papa (sometimes fondly known as “coughy chest”). She will certainly be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this time.

11/24/2004 Villagers in the USA Celebrates Thanksgiving.

On Thursday November 25th Villagers in the USA will celebrate Thanksgiving Day along with the rest of the American Diaspora.

When one thinks of the Perils of Hurricane Ivan and the way Jamaica was spared from the full brunt, it is not difficult to be thankful. When we think of how Ivan was headed directly for Kingston and suddenly made an unexpected wobble (still unexplainable by meteorologists), it causes one reflect on God’s mercy. As we participate in this tradition may we keep these things in mind.

In case we forgot the effects of Ivan, this link might help. Click to view Pictures!

11/12/2004 New Spring Village Bulletin Board.

The old Spring Village bulletin board has been moved to give way to a new expanded form. It is now integrated into the discussion forum which allows Villagers to navigate more easily and reply to specific messages directly. These features were impossible with the old board. Although one does not need to be a member to post messages on this board at this time, we do encourage all visitors to register so they can gain access to its many features.  The discussion of various topics is also facilitated on the Spring Village Discussion Forum. This new forum dubbed “Village Road on the Internet” will be used to exchange views and help bring us closer on issues affecting the community.

This year was also extra special due to the presence of some folks from the U.K. That was a pleasant surprise indeed. 10/12/2004 U.K. 2004 Spring Village Reunion Pictures.

After much delay pictures of the U.K. Spring Village reunion have finally been posted. Thanks to the efforts of Leon Delahaye and the rest of the London team we are now able to see some new faces as well as those not seen in a very long, long, long, long, long, long, time. The U.K. most likely has the largest body of Villagers outside of Jamaica and hopefully as these events grow others will participate. The team also used the occasion as an impromptu benefit for those affected by the hurricane. Kudos to the U.K. team! Updates of this can be found in their minutes. Click here to view the U.K. Minutes.

Also, pictures of the reunion can be found on the Events Calendar page at http://www.springvillage.org/EventsCalendar.html

09/30/2004 Rushie.

Condolences to the Cespedee family on the passing of Osmond also known as Rushie. He was a well-known Villager who helped contribute to the shaping of the culture as we know it today. A gregarious individual, Rushie was always know for this prowess at playing Dominos and his skills at hunting wild hogs. He was always generous and filled with humor, which was always contagious around him. Our thoughts and prayers are Cedric, Boby Stout (Roderick) and other members of the Cespedee family at this time.

09/28/2004 Historic U.K. Spring Village Reunion.

The Spring Village Association (London Chapter) had their long anticipated Spring village Reunion last Saturday the 25th. This historic occasion marked the first of its kind to be held in the U.K. and was the result of the hard work of organizers from the London Spring village Association Chapter. The degree of planning over these number of months certainly attributed to its success.

This was held at the Battersea PUB in Southwest London and as expected, went down in fine style. Everyone was extremely excited to see each other as they got together to reunite in typical Village fashion. The air was quite nostalgic as some who have not seen each other in over 15-20 years reunite. Words could not express the feelings of warmth experienced among the crowd. Many were hugging and kissing each other as they connected for the first time in (donkey) years. Some even cried as they were so ecstatic from the euphoria of seeing new and old mixing and mingling with each other. There were about 200-250 people in attendance, which was quite an achievement seeing that all this came about in only about three short months.

Humroy Whyte, who is currently the President of the association addressed the audience at about 1am, then the music took over again as people dance eat drink laugh chat, posed for pictures.

Congratulations to the U.K chapter for its vision and determination in bringing the village community together in that part of the world. The night left many people asking when the next reunion party will take place.

Visit this site often as pictures will be posted shortly.

09/28/2004 New Spring Village Discussion Forum.

Villagers can now discuss various topics at length on the new Spring Village Discussion Forum. This new forum dubbed “Village Road on the Internet” will be used to exchange views and help bring us closer on issues affecting the community. The old bulletin board will be used to post general messages but the discussion forum has various features like instant messaging for chatting to other members currently on line and the ability to deal with a wide range of topics.

The forum has topics pertaining to social issues within the community as well as the superb opportunity to discuss village history. Users can request new topics from the administrator as well as openly share their views. The forum was recently very instrumental in communicating information on Hurricane Ivan. We hope villagers will make use of this new feature on the website.

Please note that to use the forum you will need to register. This is a simple process of just signing up with a user name and your password will be automatically E-mailed to you. So far, the membership keeps growing as more and more people sign up.

09/15/2004 Message from Shiloh Pastor

From: "Norva Rodney" <revbbc@anngel.com>

Subject: Ivan Update

Date: Wed, 15 Sep 2004 09:09:30 -0500

Christian greetings and best wishes to you brothers.

As you can see, some of us have survived the worst of the hurricane which did everything except hurrying its way across the Atlantic, but instead dwaddled along leaving behind a trail of woes and wants. Nevertheless, we thank God for sparing our lives.

My last check yesterday, of the Spring Village community revealed that a number of persons suffered loss of property, especially their roof and furniture. I am leaving here in a moment to continue making efforts at assisting the less fortunate with obtaining and putting back some sheets of zinc on their dwellings. The Baptist Church which I serve as Pastor, will need thorough re-roofing, since although it served as a shelter for some families, it also suffered damages to the roof etc.,

We appreciate your prayerful intercessions and are convinced that they factored in our having been spared the full impact of hurricane Ivan. In light of the prevailing circumstances within the Village, which include the lack of electricity and limited telephone access, I make myself available to receive expressions on behalf of your immediate family and close associates. I will be happy to print whatever is sent and deliver without compromise.

09/09/2004 Annual Spring Village New York Chapter get-together was a blast!

At least 3-400 Villagers and well wishers showed up at Freeman’s over the weekend. It was nice to see some old faces as we reunited once more on village Road “New York city”. At least that was what it felt like. Besides Villagers from the USA, others came from Canada and the U.K to join in the fun. A couple of my friends tried to pose themselves as villagers but as we know, they will always be found out. As usual all are welcomed inside a village gathering and that was how it was. There was lots of food to make the occasion wonderful. Everton was this year’s grill master (he now looks a lot like Mass Reggie), thanks to the whole food crew everything was great. There were foods like Barbeque chicken, curried goat, Steam Fish, Manish water, Jerk Pork etc. The food was so great that our hearts went out to those who were not present. This year a raffle was held to benefit the Village. Tickets are still on sale so contact Rosie or freeman. Pictures of the event will be posted soon. Mark your calendars for the next Spring Village association get-together to be held in the U.K. in September. For details check the Events calendar page http://www.springvillage.org/EventsCalendar.html.

07/19/2004 Spring Village Toronto Chapter Constitution Now On-Line.

The Spring Village Association Toronto Chapter now has a description of its unit as well as its Constitution available on line. This allows Villagers worldwide to tap into the activities of this chapter and keep up to date with their operations. The Toronto chapter is the oldest of them all and serves as a model for others to follow. They have been very active for many years and have a large membership and long list of accomplishments to show for it. They should not rest easy however, since other chapters are on their heels and ready to demonstrate their own successes.

Congratulations to the Toronto chapter for blazing the trails and setting a good example for others to follow.

08/9/2004 Soney.

It is with much regret that we announce the passing of Soney, a well known Villager. He recently passed on after a long illness. He will surely be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mendez family at this time.

07/19/2004 Spring Village Chapter Meeting Minutes Now On-Line.

Villagers worldwide are now able to view the minutes of respective chapters on-line. This is meant to keep the entire community informed as well as to share ideas so all can benefit. This also helps to ensure that projects benefiting the Village are better coordinated and that efforts are not duplicated. Currently, we start with the U.K. chapter which had its latest meeting on July 17th. They have created history by being the first chapter to post their minutes on-line. This sets a trend for other chapters to follow. Congratulations U.K!

As part of this effort a location is created for each chapter to list pertinent information. This will include a brief description of their unit, ongoing activities, future goals, their latest minutes as well as other key contact information. This will certainly benefit the community at large since chapters both local and abroad will be able to utilize this resource. Click here to view the U.K. Minutes.

07/07/2004 Runey’s Annual Barbecue was a blast!  (New York Chapter).

The annual barbecue held at runeys went down in fine style on Saturday July 3rd. As usual the Spring Village New Yorkers came together to have fun and enjoy each others company at their annual summer barbeque. There were at least fifty people who stopped in to do some of the traditional things that village people like to do like laugh, chat and reminisce on the good old times around some great food. Most people come hoping to run into some faces they have not seen in a very long time. As usual, the food was delightful and abundant. If you miss your fowl, pig or fish, it was probably on Runey’s grill. As customary, no one left without hearing the message of salvation from Runey’s preaching which is intended to uplift the brethren and open the door to those in need of a right relationship with God. Click here to view Pictures from Runey’s Event!

Mark your calendar for the next summer event September 4th & 5th at Freeman’s (Check the calendar of Events page) where the Villagers from Canada will join those in New York for a two day event as we bring the summer to a close.

07/07/2004 Latest Meeting Update  (U.K. Chapter).

The goal is that the proceeds would be given to the community for developmental projects like schools, roads etc. An account was created for these proceeds.

We congratulate the U.K. chapter as they are off to a great start!

05/10/2004 Spring Village Road Renovation.

The main road in Spring Village is currently under renovation. The work is being done by Jamaica Broilers and spear headed by Mr. Levy of Broilers. The work starts from bottom pipe and ends at the Delahaye top Shop. The renovation entails refurbishing of the road as well as the installation of drains to provide drainage. The setting up of adequate drainage is necessary to prevent erosion due to heavy rains. The work should last for a few months. Currently, many youths inside the village are employed as a result of the road repair. This helps to make a positive impact in the community as it enhances the relationship with Broilers and the community. Kudos to Jamaica Broilers.

03/10/2004 Shiloh gets new Minister.

Shiloh Baptist Church welcomes their new minister, Pastor Norva Rodney who recently served in St. Ann for 10 years and now makes his home in the Kitson town circuit of churches. The circuit is comprised of Shiloh, Dover and Kitson Town where he is based.

Pastor Rodney follows a great tradition of pastors such as Pastor Carter Henry, Zeph Dawnes, Jeffrey McKenzie and Harry Jarrett. He is a minister concerned with the “total man” and not only the spiritual aspects. He expresses his desire to work with the community and its development bodies to help advance its causes.

Shiloh has been without a pastor for some time now and is happy to have Pastor Rodney at the helm. The Spring Village community welcomes Pastor Rodney and prays for his success.

12/30/03 Myra

A heart felt condolence goes out to the family of Myra (Miss Naana’s daughter). She has always been one of the most soft-spoken and gentle persons the Village has ever known. Despite her illness she has never complained but always had a kind word for those who encountered her. She was always well spoken and very knowledgeable. Myra has always carried herself with a certain degree of grace. She will surely be missed.

Our sympathy goes out to Niah, Kelly, Skuma, Nadine, Maisey, Old man and the rest of the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

9/21/03 Miss Check

Once more we regret to announce the recent passing of another stalwart of the spring village community, Mrs. Vastina Morgan (Miss check) also known to many as "The pudding Lady". She transitioned on Sunday 9/21/03. We all owe a great deal to her legacy as we celebrate her life. She has fed not only the people of the Village with her cooking but those from Church Pen, Old Harbor and all over as they came to work at Jamaica Broilers. Her shop would be busy both day and night as people from school, work or church would stop by for their order. Whether it may be for her Corn meal or cassava pudding, variety of cooked meals or her strong ginger beer which is still rated No.1 even to this day, we will all think of Miss Check with a certain degree of fondness. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of us all. She will most certainly be missed.

Our Condolence goes out to the entire Bryan family. Wally, Babe, Pedro, Beenie Bud, Blossom, Fitsburt, Delroy, Kenute,Verna, Caswell, Dottie, Ena, Eva and the entire Bryan family.

9/16/03 Albert Bryan (Moochu)

It is with much regret that we announce the recent passing of one of the essential members of the spring village community, Mr. Albert Bryan, also known as "Moochu", or "Sall cup" (see picture on Village faces page). He has left a spirit in the community that will never be duplicated. For many years he has been the fuel behind the famous Spring Village tradition called "Burru", a group of minstrels beating drums at Christmas time, singing songs with lyrics made exclusively from news inside the Village (scandalous or not). These lyrics were based on events throughout the current year. Everyone would listen for their personal stories and would breathe a sigh of relief if their story were not divulged. Mucho was a friend of most, if not all Village people. He and his contribution will certainly be missed.

Our Condolence goes out to the entire Bryan family. Miss Check, Wally, Babe, Pedro, Beenie Bud, Blossom, Fitsburt, Delroy, Kenute,Verna, Caswell, Dottie and the entire Bryan family. Funeral will be held Sunday 28 Sept. 2003. If you would like to donate, please send it through Western Union to Delroy Bryan Tel# (876) 8667703

9/15/03 Wilburn Williams   See Picture

It is with much sorrow that we report the tragic death of Wilburn Williams, one of the Ethel twins. Who was allegedly fatally stabbed by his Nephew (Sharon’s son). Our prayers and support are with the Williams family at this time. The entire Spring Village community mourns the loss of another young son and hopes this is a reminder for us not to lose sight of our true values.

9/10/03 Miss Imo (Granny Mac)

We regret to announce the recent passing of Miss Imo also called Granny Mac, one of the most senior residents of Spring Village. Miss Imo has always been a key contributor to the people and culture of the village. Many remember her for her humor, determination and depth of knowledge. She will certainly be missed.

Our heart felt Condolence goes out to the entire family, Miss Sweet-gal, Garland, Veniece, Marva, Joe, Edward, Ina and many more in the U.K. and all over. Our prayers are with you.
