Rooney’s barbecue was again a great success. As expected, over a hundred villagers and none-villagers passed by
to sample his delights. For those who never made it, they missed out not
only on seeing the many faces, from New York, Connecticut, New Jersey,
Massachusetts, Canada, Jamaica and even as far as England but the great food.
This year’s selection consisted of Roast Fish. Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork,
corn, manish water, etc.
The occasion was also graced by our surprise guest of honor
Mrs. Ruby Gibbs past-Teacher and vice Principal of Spring Village All age
School who served from 1971 through the early eighties. It was complete shock
and awe on the faces of many of her past-students when they arrived and saw
her; many who have not seen her for decades.
The day was also punctuated by Rooney’s preaching (which he
does each year) as he shared the word of God, prayed and invited his guests to
a relationship with Christ.
Many thanks to Rooney and his wife Carlene who each year
graciously opens up their home and provide such feast for the

The Senior Librarian of the St. Catherine Parish Library,
Miss Paulette Benjie is scheduled to visit the Spring
Village Library for the second time this year. The first visit was done a few
months ago where the occasion was used to evaluate the library and provide
valuable feedback in key areas.
This is part of the overall strategy of the Spring Village
Library project where the goal is to establish an ongoing relationship with the
Jamaica Library Service and thus benefit from their expertise so that
appropriate methods can be used in the establishment of the library.
This visit will be used to train our three librarians to
arrange the books using standardized practices so that they can be located more
efficiently by patrons. Discussions are also underway to allow librarians to
attend additional training sessions on location in
Usage of the Spring Village Library continues to grow as it
is starting to be seen as commonplace within the community. It gets daily use
from the 30 or more HART student population currently attending the Training
Centre plus the surge of grade-school students (25-30) which comes in daily to
borrow books. In addition, those attending high school as well as college drops
in during the evenings to do homework or to work on their research papers.
Finally, the small but growing number of adult
visitors (who are now getting used to the presence of a library in their
community) are slowly but surely coming in to do their share of reading and
learning to use the computers. These successes underscore the relevance of the
library project and are indicative of the great future which lies ahead.
The Spring Village Library is extremely grateful for the
support of the St. Catherine Parish Library as it establishes itself and an
invaluable resource within the surrounding area. Its presence eliminates the
need for bookmobiles as well as a schools library program, plus the depth and
breadth of its collection will make it a hub for students and professionals
within the surrounding areas and beyond.
The much needed expansion of the facility has seen setbacks
late last year due to the lack of specific building materials but despite these
challenges the focus remains and the project team will continue to seek
support; therefore, it is not a question of “if” but “when”.

This August the Spring Village Website celebrates its fifth
birthday, that’s right. This marks an important milestone and it seems like
only yesterday; but as they say, “time flies when we are having fun”.
After tens of thousands of visits from people from all over
the world, villagers and non-villagers alike, the Spring Village Website
continues to chronicle the happenings of
Much of this can be seen from the early excitement created
when the site was first launched, where villagers found themselves for the
first time with the ability to gather around a central connection point, one
which they could call their own and one which forever changed the way they
communicated.
As a result of the site those who have not seen each other
for many decades now have a means of reaching one another, either by exchanging
of messages online or by seeing one another across the globe in pictures.
Some have seen their friends and relatives this way (only in
pictures) over decades. Others have shared that this has brought tears to their
eyes after not seeing their loved ones for such a long time.
The website is also key to bringing
together villagers from all over the world as they converge on

The encounter was astounding, as not even Brian Lara in his
heyday was as good as the women especially Ferret Cameron. Not to mention the
women’s wicket keeper Faye Squire (no West Indian wicket keeper could measure
up her). When it came to bowling Ferret, Faye and Jacqui Banton
gave them more than what they bargained for. The women indeed made minced-meat
out of the men's bowling. The women made a staggering 64 all out but the men
far less. The men were sent in to bat and they were said to have disgraced the

The computer which was recently stolen from the Spring
Village Community Library was found in the bushes on Tuesday morning at about
In response to the robbery students and staff demonstrated
throughout the village demanding that the equipment be returned.
Based on the latest information a 7 year-old boy who
frequented the library and an apparently avid user came forward on Monday to
report that the computer was allegedly stolen by his 15 year-old brother. As a
result of this new information further investigation is being conducted.
The Computer on the other hand seemed to have had its share
of bruises during the fiasco and have suffered some degree of physical damage.
It is not yet clear if it is still operable.
The Spring Village Community Library suffered its latest
tragedy as it was discovered that over the past weekend (possibly Friday Night,
Jan. 4th) thieves broke into the building and stole one of five computers.
According to sources, this may have occurred during one of
the many power-cuts which have been plaguing the island over the last few
weeks.
It was suspected that the culprits may have either hid in
the building before it closed or have entered through an unlocked gate adjacent
to the library which was accessible only from the roof. As a result the door to
the main section was pried open and one of the four computers stolen.
In response, the HEART students and staff of the centre took
to the streets and launched a demonstration to protest the burglary. They bore
placards sending the message that “they (burglars) were stealing from the
future of their own children and that the computer be returned”. This was done
to sensitize the community of the depravity of the action and proved to be
somewhat effective. As a result, calls were made to the centre with possible
tips. One caller claimed that the unit had been seen in someone’s yard however
this proved unfruitful after the police arrived to investigate. The only
significant finding was that on Wednesday the mouse was returned by someone who
claimed to have found it.
On Wednesday a remote meeting was held with the staff and
Jerry Nelson of the N.Y. chapter to discuss the issue of security. It was
mentioned that ironically, last month, a security company was brought in to
conduct an evaluation of the facillity and make
recommendations for installing security equipment. Unfortunately the report has
not yet been received and therefore would greatly be considered in light of
this situation.
Currently, the staff is working to reevaluate the issue of
security to prevent future incidents from occurring. This includes preventative
measures such as installing additional burglar bars and instituting specific
procedures to ensure the entire facility is secure.
Happy new year to all Villagers at home and abroad and while
we bid 2007 goodbye we are thankful for the many blessings and grateful for
God’s provisions through the most challenging times.
The year 2007 was quite an eventful one as the village
resurfaced from Hurricane Dean which rocked the island in August. Despite these
challenges and others we are very grateful to be alive. Lets also think of
those who have lost loved ones along the way and offer up a prayer for their
comfort.
As we approach the new year we can definitely say that much
has been accomplished in 2007. It marked a year where we have finally started
to see more direct fruits of the sons and daughters of
Much of this was displayed as we have seen major impacts to

From the above one can clearly see that the Diaspora is
continuing to make their mark in the community like never before. This is a
direct result of the network which has been established over the last four
years with the launching of our website and creation of chapters. In fact, the
Diaspora has never felt more connected. Much more is anticipated for 2008 and
with God’ help we believe it will happen. Thanks to all who added their piece

been linked together on the internet due to their ease of access to the Spring
Village website. As a result, old relationships have been rekindled, reunions
held, chapters formed and now there has been a closer feeling among villagers
that distance no longer hinders. Unfortunately, the village has lagged behind
because of its limited access. Thanks to
Jamaica Broilers and the efforts of the library project all of this is about to
change. Villagers will now be able to use computers located in the library for
gaining access to the rest of the globe and freely communicate with loved ones
as they gain real-time knowledge on what is happening around the world.
The Library currently has four
computers and hopefully as time goes by the number will increase. This is a
significant leap for the library and obviously a key part of its infrastructure
but it is highly symbolic, since the project is not even a year old and the
library not yet officially open. In the future, the library will have a
computer room where a variety of tasks can be conducted. This is part of the
goal to expand the current facility into one which can adequately meet the
needs of the community.
Anyone who has equipment to donate
or would like to be a part of this project please visit our library page to see
the current needs. Contact can be made by sending an email to pothousepen@yahoo.com
Thank you Jamaica Broilers!!!!

A happy and prosperous New year to
all Villagers at home and abroad. 2006 went down as a year of tremendous growth
as we have seen a greater level of maturity among our chapters.
The purpose of our chapters remains the same as we unite
villagers across the globe and bring goodwill to our village.
One of our key achievements of 2006 was the heightened
intercommunication now experienced among chapters. As a result, ideas are
starting to flow more freely across them and members are understanding that we
are no longer bounded by our location.
This is huge, since just a few years ago we were struggling
to form the NY and U.K chapters. Now we have seen the organization of our new
When we launched the website almost four years ago the most
organized chapter was
There is now a tighter working relationship with the SVDF
and other local bodies, hence the progress of our library and plans to enhance
local health projects.
In 2007 year it would be great to see us embark on the area
of scholarships. It would be also nice to see more direct contributions in the
area of sports, since this is a key barometer of the social fabric of our
community.
This year will also have its own challenges but if we just
stay focused and think of our labor and its impact over the next five or ten
years we will see it is well worth it.
What we have accomplished so far is due to the hard work the
historical research team, library committees, organizers and individual
contributors.
As a result, we have seen a direct display of the caliber of
talent among villagers as they are being used for the betterment of our
community.
The Spring Village Community Library continues to make
steady progress. The library now has over 15 registered patrons and counting.
This may not sound like a ”big deal” but it is, since last year this time, a
location was just found and the book count was next to nothing.
As of this update, the library has over 2,500 books on
location, with another 3,000 to be shipped. This includes CDs and videos enough
to create a small audiovisual library. That’s a lot of ground to cover in only
one year, thanks to all the library teams and book donors.
The activity is also starting to pick up and the word is
getting around. In fact, there are high school students who have stared to
travel from outside the village to use the facilities during the evening hours.
Besides this, there are students from the nearby primary school who drops in
every evening to use the computers. According to reports, they have been known
to fight to use the computers and drive the librarian somewhat crazy but “this
is a good thing”. J
Who would have thought that the response would have been so
overwhelming even though the library is not yet opened?
This activity further underscores the importance of such a
facility in the community and shows that this was a need just waiting to be
filled.
The expectations are that within the next 5-10 years we will
see an upward scholastic shift within the community as a result of providing
such access. This should also greatly benefit students currently attending
university, casual readers as well as working professionals.
The work continues as we now focus on bolstering the lending
system. The librarian is being trained to use the software, which should be up
and running in a few weeks with the current patron population and the materials
in circulation. The training period is somewhat tedious but takes some time as
one would imagine.
Another key milestone is to get the existing computers
networked and online. This may be easier said than done since we are having
issues with basic phone lines and the phone company but we shall see.
The building expansion program is also in view as we
estimate costs and devise means of raising funds. More on this later….
Now that the library is starting to function more steadily
it is a perfect time to have another open house. This should help get the word
around and enlist more community support.
With all this activity, we are also building a website for
the library. Hopefully this should be ready within a few months and should help
provide more flexibility for gaining wider access. To take a sneak preview Click

May she rest in peace.
As it is often said, “a rolling stone gathers no moss” this
view could be held of the Spring Village Community Library project. After a
year of just searching for the appropriate location, the effort has gone from
concept to unfolding reality. The
library now has over 2,500 books on location, with another 1500 plus to be
received in the near future. With training provided with the help of the
Jamaica Library Association, it now has its own homegrown librarian Shereece Francis on board. Shereece,
along with the local library team has been quite busy preparing the library for
general utilization for the near future. This is no small feat as they have
been putting in extra effort to catalog the thousands of books in light of the
constant changes around them. The following are some key highlights of the
effort:
A major milestone has been reached in that, the NY Chapter
has purchased and delivered the Software needed to run the library. This no small
achievement since, it has the capability of managing circulation of over 20,000
items including books, CDs, Videos, artifacts etc. Yes, the library will also
have a section dedicated to
The software is a data base which manages the circulation as
well as Patrons and allows librarians to check in/out items. It also allows the
collection to be searchable on the WEB for wider access. This is clearly an
investment that will last us for the next 10 - 15 years or more.
The funds obtained from the CHASE grant came in handy to
help create some temporary space. This is done until a more permanent structure
can be created. Some of the funds are already going towards salaries however,
much has gone to purchase and construct a plywood wall to enclose the area
between the bathroom and the existing library to prepare the library for
possible use in September for the back to school crowd. Additional shelving is
currently needed to complete this.
Although the library is in its infant stages, there is
currently limited use of the material by students at Centre. For the first
time, some of the Home Economics students have actual texts to work with. This
makes a great difference in their learning. All who contributed to the
library’s success so far should be proud! When the books are all catalogued
this will certainly pick up.
A rough estimate was received from Mr. Joe Green for
finishing the bottom floor of the library. If the bottom is complete the top
floor can be tackled later. The figure will be published once a more complete
estimate is received. It is possible that fundraisers can be launched among
chapters to contribute to the materials and then apply some of the remaining
CHASE funds to labor.
Yes! Believe it or not, the first open house was held on

of Barbeque chicken, roast fish stuffed with a variety of vegetables including
fresh Collaloo from his garden. There was also Jerk
pork, a well known Jamaican favorite which was seasoned so thoroughly that the
flavors were soaked through to the bone. This explains why people keep

Throughout the last five years or so Spring Village has
benefited from the work of various U.S. Peace Corps volunteers. These folks
have left their home and other comfort zones to travel to different parts of
the globe and offer their service to a variety of humanitarian needs. As a
result, not only do they impact the lives of those they encounter, but their
own lives are changed as well.
Jeannie and Kenn Miller are no
different in this regard. As residents of the state of Michigan and former
volunteers to Haiti, they have chosen to spend the past two years at Spring
Village. Since then, they have been based at the Spring Village Training
Centre, from where they involve themselves in the various needs of the
community.
Since their tenure they have been occupied with some key
ventures like the Neem and Moringa
tree planting project for sustainable development, Youth and elderly health
care, including a weekly blood pressure clinic at Shiloh Baptist Church and the
collaboration with community associations on development of the Spring Village
Community Library. These are just some of the areas in which they place their
efforts. Through the past hurricane season, they have helped to organize the
training centre as an emergency shelter and have also helped to rebuild
structures in the aftermath of the storm. Truly, as villagers we are forever
indebted to them.
In June of this year their mission comes to a close as they
prepare to return to their homeland. Throughout their stay, we have been
enriched in countless ways by their presence. As villagers worldwide, we all
say thank you to both Jeanne and Kenn Miller for
sharing their lives with us. In this regard, we consider them honorary
villagers and we will be forever friends.

Currently, the Jamaican committee has engaged the Jamaica

have expressed a commitment to helping us succeed. It is hoped that at some

The Jamaican team is also busily preparing to receive the

additional shelving.
A computer was donated last year which should help with the
cataloging process. Software is also being evaluated for managing the
circulation.
It should be noted, that the library effort will be run in
two phases. The first phase (now underway) is to get the existing
infrastructure operational for general use. The second is to expand the current
facility to create additional space for reading, computer lab, audiovisuals,

Steady progress continues to be made
as the Spring Village Library Project ramps to another level. The committees
have collected over 1000 books for donation since September of this year and
the count continues to climb. These books cover a wide range of subjects and
disciplines and will help bring access to a breath of knowledge for members of
the community.
The presence of a library will not
only add prestige to the community but will also serve the many high school and
university students in the area who sometimes need travel far distances to
further their knowledge. Currently there are students who go to the Old Harbour Library to every Saturday to study. If we could
provide them daily access, this would enhance their efforts greatly. With our
own library in operation we could easily meet these needs plus those of others
in the community who would like to access new reading material. If this project
is done properly, its collection could rival that of other libraries around.
There should be something for everyone including working professionals.
The books collected so far are of
varying interests. They cover Art, Science, Mathematics, Languages, Computer
Technology, Automotive Technology, Medicine, Psychology, Teaching, Hotel
Management just to name a few. They are very current and will help to provide
Villagers with access to today’s knowledge as well as that of the past. It is
hoped that some day after the cataloging is complete; the library collection
will be searchable on the WEB so others outside the library can also access it.
The NY Chapter is currently
preparing a letter of offer to the Spring Village Development Foundation to
indicate their interest to support the venture. They are also preparing to send
their first shipment of books, which should take place in early 2006. Everyone
is equally excited about this effort.

The spring village library committees have begun their
meetings to kick off the Spring Village Library project. The goal is to create
a functioning library where villages of all ages and levels of education can
come to further their knowledge. This will be a place where ideas can be
exchanged and independent research can also be conducted. The library will have
areas for study, internet browsing and places where free form discussions can
take place.
The library will be housed as part of the Spring Village
Training Centre but will operate independently and be accessible to all
villagers. The project is currently endorsed by the Spring Village Development
Foundation and will consist of a partnership between villagers locally and
abroad. It will be located on the northern end of the training Centre and will
consist of two levels. As the planning continues, it will become clearer how
the space will be utilized.
So far, the goal is to run two phases of the project in
parallel. One phase is to make the existing book room functional for use in the
very near future. This requires shoring up of what is already established,
stocking additional items and cataloging them. The other phase is the actual
expansion where the additional space can be upgraded for future use.

was well received as expected. All New Yorkers and others came together to have

The village will be filled with gettogethers
to celebrate their reunion. Mega families like the DeLaHayes,
Bryans, Lawrences, Francis, Gilberts, Campbells, Walters are known to have defined the Village.
The DeLaHayes have been in the Village from at least
the 1940s. The three main DeLaHaye Matriarchs were
known as Reggie (the village Butcher and businessman), Beckman (the Bulldozer
operator) and Purry (the businessman). Much of their
legacy is still seen inside the Village today.
As one would imagine, throughout the years many of the
Village families have blended. It is often said that “all villagers are
related” and if an actual family tree was done there would be no surprise.
Come join the DeLaHayes, wana-be-DeLaHayes and other pumpkin-vine DeLaHaye-likes as they celebrate a reunion which is the
first of its kind. Congrats to them all!

We regret to announce the recent passing of Tat (Harris),
daughter of Mrs. “Punku” Harris. She died recently
after a long illness. Most of us
remember her for her humor and quiet ways about life. She will certainly be missed.
Our heart felt Condolence goes out to the Harris and Hemmings family, her surviving daughter and grand child.
Also to Mrs. Punku, Rose, Bunny, Paul and rest of the
family. Our prayers are with you. We also take the time to offer belated
condolence to both families on the prior passing of Tat’s
husband “Police Hemmings” who died in May. Both will
be certainly missed.

Life in the Village back in the days….. This evening's
Observer report of the heroic, record shattering and simply awesome performance
of OUR Village football team, however, has forced me to break my
"situation" imposed incommunicado.
For those of you who have not yet heard, the
This is by no means an easy feat and should not be treated
lightly. In fact, over the past 35 years numerous teams of promising players
with boundless potential have emerged and tried valiantly to slay the insidious
Division II dragon, but all have withered by the wayside. None before now have
been able to extricate themselves from its thorny, suffocating grips.
In the early 70's the great coach Dennis Chen and his Mighty
Men were considered invincible and unstoppable. With players of the calibre of Scoop, the two Tonys,
Daddy Coo, the Harris Boys, Mutt, Gentles, Norman and Copter, it was
inconceivable to even think that such a team would not eventually represent the
entire parish of St Catherine!! It turns out though that the only team they
could convincingly beat was Sanko, Cabalerro and the
other Merry Men from Church Pen. They were the first of many teams to fail the
D II hurdle.
At the twilight of the 70's and the dawn of the 80's, new
entrants to the team include the up-the-road Delahaye
trio of Derrie, Collie and Beckman, while from down
the road, Copter and Ho-ko (dollar) were fixtures in
the squad. Governor and to a lesser extent Channa
(Putty) forced their way into the side with their aggressive defensive play.
Bigger brother Scoop was a mainstay. Natty
As the 80's progressed wave after wave of new talent entered
the fray. Copper, the Balgrove brothers, Marshalleck,
The Mid 80's saw the transitioning of a new breed of players
into the squad - DaCosta and Manning Cup players!!
Heading this list were the likes of Bryan, slick Jackie Slime (Author), the
effervescent Bun, the mercurial and deadly Nedris,
the skillful Slicer, the playmaker Kiman, the hard tackling and never say die Turner, Trees
who considers himself a general, Desmond and Stomach holding the back line.
Just like their predecessors, they too wilted at the alter of D II.
The 90's saw the emergence of the young and fit. names that
readily come to mind include Granny the goal keeper, Skoochie,
Skilla, Harry Banner, Belly Rat, Hansom Toby and the
likes. A team was even established by combining the synergies of Village and
Scheme, well funded and organized, but.... just could not shake the old monkey.
These list of players from the different eras of the Village
football history is by no means exhaustive. There were many, many others who
had donned the
And so Villagers one and all, this convoluted route was
taken to put in perspective the essence of what has been accomplished here. As
a true enthusiast of the sport and supporter of the team, it is with relief,
humility and a sense of deep pride that i lift my hat
to Fernando and Zowie for marshalling the troops to
finally, yes finally, slay that darn D II monkey/dragon. Thank you guys, I am
really proud of you all, Ron and Vincent- the goal scorers especially. I dare
say that all who have tried before you are genuinely appreciative of your
efforts.
The onus is now on all of us to get the team prepared for
the challenges that lie ahead. Its folly to finally break free from the D II
dragon only to slip back into its oppressive bottom-of-the-barrell
clutches after just one season. Lets all put our shoulders behind their effort
and encourage them on!! They will need it to be competitive at Division I. Yo'all remember it takes cash to care!!

Let’s remember the challenges of 2004 and trust the Lord for

reminisce on the good old times around some great food. Most people come hoping
to run into some faces they have not seen in a very long time. As usual, the

Once more we regret to announce the recent passing of
another stalwart of the spring village community, Mrs. Vastina
Morgan (Miss check) also known to many as "The pudding Lady". She
transitioned on Sunday 9/21/03. We all owe a great deal to her legacy as we
celebrate her life. She has fed not only the people of the Village with her
cooking but those from Church Pen, Old Harbor and all over as they came to work
at Jamaica Broilers. Her shop would be busy both day and night as people from school,
work or church would stop by for their order. Whether it may be for her Corn
meal or cassava pudding, variety of cooked meals or her strong ginger beer
which is still rated No.1 even to this day, we will all think of Miss Check
with a certain degree of fondness. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of us all.
She will most certainly be missed.
Our Condolence goes out to the entire Bryan family. Wally,

family.
It is with much regret that we announce the recent passing
of one of the essential members of the spring village community, Mr. Albert
Bryan, also known as "Moochu", or "Sall cup" (see picture on Village faces page). He has
left a spirit in the community that will never be duplicated. For many years he
has been the fuel behind the famous Spring Village tradition called "Burru", a group of minstrels beating drums at
Christmas time, singing songs with lyrics made exclusively from news inside the
Village (scandalous or not). These lyrics were based on events throughout the
current year. Everyone would listen for their personal stories and would
breathe a sigh of relief if their story were not divulged. Mucho was a friend
of most, if not all Village people. He and his contribution will certainly be
missed.
Our Condolence goes out to the entire Bryan family. Miss
Check, Wally, Babe, Pedro, Beenie Bud, Blossom, Fitsburt, Delroy, Kenute,Verna, Caswell, Dottie and the entire Bryan family.
Funeral will be held Sunday 28 Sept. 2003. If you would like to donate, please

It is with much sorrow that we report the tragic death of
Wilburn Williams, one of the Ethel twins. Who was allegedly fatally stabbed by
his Nephew (Sharon’s son). Our prayers and support are with the Williams family
at this time. The entire Spring Village community mourns the loss of another
young son and hopes this is a reminder for us not to lose sight of our true
values.
9/10/03 Miss Imo (Granny Mac)
We regret to announce the recent passing of Miss Imo also called
Granny Mac, one of the most senior residents of Spring Village. Miss Imo has
always been a key contributor to the people and culture of the village. Many
remember her for her humor, determination and depth of knowledge. She will
certainly be missed.
Our heart felt Condolence goes out to the entire family,
Miss Sweet-gal, Garland, Veniece, Marva,

you.
