Rooney’s barbecue was again a great success. As expected, over a hundred villagers and none-villagers passed by
to sample his delights. For those who never made it, they missed out not
only on seeing the many faces, from New York, Connecticut, New Jersey,
Massachusetts, Canada, Jamaica and even as far as England but the great food.
This year’s selection consisted of Roast Fish. Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork,
corn, manish water, etc.
The occasion was also graced by our surprise guest of honor
Mrs. Ruby Gibbs past-Teacher and vice Principal of Spring Village All age
School who served from 1971 through the early eighties. It was complete shock
and awe on the faces of many of her past-students when they arrived and saw
her; many who have not seen her for decades.
The day was also punctuated by Rooney’s preaching (which he
does each year) as he shared the word of God, prayed and invited his guests to
a relationship with Christ.
Many thanks to Rooney and his wife Carlene who each year
graciously opens up their home and provide such feast for the

The Senior Librarian of the St. Catherine Parish Library,
Miss Paulette Benjie is scheduled to visit the Spring
Village Library for the second time this year. The first visit was done a few
months ago where the occasion was used to evaluate the library and provide
valuable feedback in key areas.
This is part of the overall strategy of the Spring Village
Library project where the goal is to establish an ongoing relationship with the
Jamaica Library Service and thus benefit from their expertise so that
appropriate methods can be used in the establishment of the library.
This visit will be used to train our three librarians to
arrange the books using standardized practices so that they can be located more
efficiently by patrons. Discussions are also underway to allow librarians to
attend additional training sessions on location in
Usage of the Spring Village Library continues to grow as it
is starting to be seen as commonplace within the community. It gets daily use
from the 30 or more HART student population currently attending the Training
Centre plus the surge of grade-school students (25-30) which comes in daily to
borrow books. In addition, those attending high school as well as college drops
in during the evenings to do homework or to work on their research papers.
Finally, the small but growing number of adult
visitors (who are now getting used to the presence of a library in their
community) are slowly but surely coming in to do their share of reading and
learning to use the computers. These successes underscore the relevance of the
library project and are indicative of the great future which lies ahead.
The Spring Village Library is extremely grateful for the
support of the St. Catherine Parish Library as it establishes itself and an
invaluable resource within the surrounding area. Its presence eliminates the
need for bookmobiles as well as a schools library program, plus the depth and
breadth of its collection will make it a hub for students and professionals
within the surrounding areas and beyond.
The much needed expansion of the facility has seen setbacks
late last year due to the lack of specific building materials but despite these
challenges the focus remains and the project team will continue to seek
support; therefore, it is not a question of “if” but “when”.

This August the Spring Village Website celebrates its fifth
birthday, that’s right. This marks an important milestone and it seems like
only yesterday; but as they say, “time flies when we are having fun”.
After tens of thousands of visits from people from all over
the world, villagers and non-villagers alike, the Spring Village Website
continues to chronicle the happenings of
Much of this can be seen from the early excitement created
when the site was first launched, where villagers found themselves for the
first time with the ability to gather around a central connection point, one
which they could call their own and one which forever changed the way they
communicated.
As a result of the site those who have not seen each other
for many decades now have a means of reaching one another, either by exchanging
of messages online or by seeing one another across the globe in pictures.
Some have seen their friends and relatives this way (only in
pictures) over decades. Others have shared that this has brought tears to their
eyes after not seeing their loved ones for such a long time.
The website is also key to bringing
together villagers from all over the world as they converge on

The encounter was astounding, as not even Brian Lara in his
heyday was as good as the women especially Ferret Cameron. Not to mention the
women’s wicket keeper Faye Squire (no West Indian wicket keeper could measure
up her). When it came to bowling Ferret, Faye and Jacqui Banton
gave them more than what they bargained for. The women indeed made minced-meat
out of the men's bowling. The women made a staggering 64 all out but the men
far less. The men were sent in to bat and they were said to have disgraced the

The computer which was recently stolen from the Spring
Village Community Library was found in the bushes on Tuesday morning at about
In response to the robbery students and staff demonstrated
throughout the village demanding that the equipment be returned.
Based on the latest information a 7 year-old boy who
frequented the library and an apparently avid user came forward on Monday to
report that the computer was allegedly stolen by his 15 year-old brother. As a
result of this new information further investigation is being conducted.
The Computer on the other hand seemed to have had its share
of bruises during the fiasco and have suffered some degree of physical damage.
It is not yet clear if it is still operable.
The Spring Village Community Library suffered its latest
tragedy as it was discovered that over the past weekend (possibly Friday Night,
Jan. 4th) thieves broke into the building and stole one of five computers.
According to sources, this may have occurred during one of
the many power-cuts which have been plaguing the island over the last few
weeks.
It was suspected that the culprits may have either hid in
the building before it closed or have entered through an unlocked gate adjacent
to the library which was accessible only from the roof. As a result the door to
the main section was pried open and one of the four computers stolen.
In response, the HEART students and staff of the centre took
to the streets and launched a demonstration to protest the burglary. They bore
placards sending the message that “they (burglars) were stealing from the
future of their own children and that the computer be returned”. This was done
to sensitize the community of the depravity of the action and proved to be
somewhat effective. As a result, calls were made to the centre with possible
tips. One caller claimed that the unit had been seen in someone’s yard however
this proved unfruitful after the police arrived to investigate. The only
significant finding was that on Wednesday the mouse was returned by someone who
claimed to have found it.
On Wednesday a remote meeting was held with the staff and
Jerry Nelson of the N.Y. chapter to discuss the issue of security. It was
mentioned that ironically, last month, a security company was brought in to
conduct an evaluation of the facillity and make
recommendations for installing security equipment. Unfortunately the report has
not yet been received and therefore would greatly be considered in light of
this situation.
Currently, the staff is working to reevaluate the issue of
security to prevent future incidents from occurring. This includes preventative
measures such as installing additional burglar bars and instituting specific
procedures to ensure the entire facility is secure.
Happy new year to all Villagers at home and abroad and while
we bid 2007 goodbye we are thankful for the many blessings and grateful for
God’s provisions through the most challenging times.
The year 2007 was quite an eventful one as the village
resurfaced from Hurricane Dean which rocked the island in August. Despite these
challenges and others we are very grateful to be alive. Lets also think of
those who have lost loved ones along the way and offer up a prayer for their
comfort.
As we approach the new year we can definitely say that much
has been accomplished in 2007. It marked a year where we have finally started
to see more direct fruits of the sons and daughters of
Much of this was displayed as we have seen major impacts to

From the above one can clearly see that the Diaspora is
continuing to make their mark in the community like never before. This is a
direct result of the network which has been established over the last four
years with the launching of our website and creation of chapters. In fact, the
Diaspora has never felt more connected. Much more is anticipated for 2008 and
with God’ help we believe it will happen. Thanks to all who added their piece

been linked together on the internet due to their ease of access to the Spring
Village website. As a result, old relationships have been rekindled, reunions
held, chapters formed and now there has been a closer feeling among villagers
that distance no longer hinders. Unfortunately, the village has lagged behind
because of its limited access. Thanks to
Jamaica Broilers and the efforts of the library project all of this is about to
change. Villagers will now be able to use computers located in the library for
gaining access to the rest of the globe and freely communicate with loved ones
as they gain real-time knowledge on what is happening around the world.
The Library currently has four
computers and hopefully as time goes by the number will increase. This is a
significant leap for the library and obviously a key part of its infrastructure
but it is highly symbolic, since the project is not even a year old and the
library not yet officially open. In the future, the library will have a
computer room where a variety of tasks can be conducted. This is part of the
goal to expand the current facility into one which can adequately meet the
needs of the community.
Anyone who has equipment to donate
or would like to be a part of this project please visit our library page to see
the current needs. Contact can be made by sending an email to pothousepen@yahoo.com
Thank you Jamaica Broilers!!!!

A happy and prosperous New year to
all Villagers at home and abroad. 2006 went down as a year of tremendous growth
as we have seen a greater level of maturity among our chapters.
The purpose of our chapters remains the same as we unite
villagers across the globe and bring goodwill to our village.
One of our key achievements of 2006 was the heightened
intercommunication now experienced among chapters. As a result, ideas are
starting to flow more freely across them and members are understanding that we
are no longer bounded by our location.
This is huge, since just a few years ago we were struggling
to form the NY and U.K chapters. Now we have seen the organization of our new
When we launched the website almost four years ago the most
organized chapter was
There is now a tighter working relationship with the SVDF
and other local bodies, hence the progress of our library and plans to enhance
local health projects.
In 2007 year it would be great to see us embark on the area
of scholarships. It would be also nice to see more direct contributions in the
area of sports, since this is a key barometer of the social fabric of our
community.
This year will also have its own challenges but if we just
stay focused and think of our labor and its impact over the next five or ten
years we will see it is well worth it.
What we have accomplished so far is due to the hard work the
historical research team, library committees, organizers and individual
contributors.
As a result, we have seen a direct display of the caliber of
talent among villagers as they are being used for the betterment of our
community.
The Spring Village Community Library continues to make
steady progress. The library now has over 15 registered patrons and counting.
This may not sound like a ”big deal” but it is, since last year this time, a
location was just found and the book count was next to nothing.
As of this update, the library has over 2,500 books on
location, with another 3,000 to be shipped. This includes CDs and videos enough
to create a small audiovisual library. That’s a lot of ground to cover in only
one year, thanks to all the library teams and book donors.
The activity is also starting to pick up and the word is
getting around. In fact, there are high school students who have stared to
travel from outside the village to use the facilities during the evening hours.
Besides this, there are students from the nearby primary school who drops in
every evening to use the computers. According to reports, they have been known
to fight to use the computers and drive the librarian somewhat crazy but “this
is a good thing”. J
Who would have thought that the response would have been so
overwhelming even though the library is not yet opened?
This activity further underscores the importance of such a
facility in the community and shows that this was a need just waiting to be
filled.
The expectations are that within the next 5-10 years we will
see an upward scholastic shift within the community as a result of providing
such access. This should also greatly benefit students currently attending
university, casual readers as well as working professionals.
The work continues as we now focus on bolstering the lending
system. The librarian is being trained to use the software, which should be up
and running in a few weeks with the current patron population and the materials
in circulation. The training period is somewhat tedious but takes some time as
one would imagine.
Another key milestone is to get the existing computers
networked and online. This may be easier said than done since we are having
issues with basic phone lines and the phone company but we shall see.
The building expansion program is also in view as we
estimate costs and devise means of raising funds. More on this later….
Now that the library is starting to function more steadily
it is a perfect time to have another open house. This should help get the word
around and enlist more community support.
With all this activity, we are also building a website for
the library. Hopefully this should be ready within a few months and should help
provide more flexibility for gaining wider access. To take a sneak preview Click
