The Tank

The Tank! (Probably here before water was invented)

This tank supplied water to the village and served as back-up during low water pressure. We still cannot figure out what to do with it since it has been taken out of commission many years ago. It seems that’s how things become land-marks.

The area in front of the Tank, has served the purpose of being the unofficial Village Square. Throughout the years it has become the focal point of many Village gatherings such as meeting place for the various political Party visits, Village wide Film shows and other group-led Events.

During the days (before Television) it served as the location for various Film shows and other forms of entertainment which graced the Village from time to time, courtesy of the reigning MP of the constituency.

Spring Village is known to have hosted visits by Prime Ministers Alexander Bustamante, Norman Manley and Edward Seaga as well as Hollywood Celebrities. One famous Hollywood actor was Ben Vereen, star of the show “Ten-speed and Brown Shoe” who visited in the 1980’s. Mr. Vereen was also famous for his role as “Chicken George” in Alex Hayley’s epic film, Roots. Mr. Verene stopped at Mass Purry’s shop and took the time to walk down the streets of the Village and interact with the locals as he took in its ambience.

These days, the tank bears witness to the many events of that time and now bears a message from the Spring Village Development Foundation welcoming visitors to our Village.

Another Tank! Even Older than the One Above.

This tank is the original water supply for the Shiloh Baptist Church. Shiloh, the oldest church in the Village, served dual roles as church and school for many years. This tank was storage for the water run-off from the church roof.

The tank throughout the years has not changed. Many attempts have been made to destroy it but have proven futile.

About 30 years ago a tractor-vator was brought in to break it up however; in 2004 the tank looks the same. This causes one to conclude that the Tractor-vator has lost the battle and is probably in a scrap heap somewhere. Rumors are that some duppy held the tank down. You decide….
